Somali Documentary - FGM - 1988

Post by Warsame101 »

A documentary recorded during the pre-civil war era in Somalia, showing the campaign started by the Revolutioniary Government in eliminating the Female Genital Mutilation (extreme form of gudniin).
The documentary details a forum that discusses the effects of FGM and how to eridicate it.
You will see glimpses of Mogadishu in the pre-civil war era, the interior of the Guriga Ummada (Peoples House), the Isbahaysiga Masjid (Mosgue) and many other snapspots reflecting the daily life of the Somali people in peaceful Mogadishu.

Amongst the speakers are:

(Wasiirkii Arimaha Gudaha ee Dawladii Kacaanka) Former Interior Minister, Cabdulqaadir Xaaji Masale

(Gudoomiyahii Ururka Haweenka Soomaaliyeed ee Dawladii Kacaanka) Former Chairman of the Somali Woman's Organisation, Muraayad Garaad

(Wasiirkii Caafimaadka ee Dawladii Kacaanka) Former Health Minister, Dr Maxamed Cali Nuur

Dahabo Faarax

(Gudoomiyahii Barlamaanka ee Dawladii Kacaanka) Speaker of Parliament Maxamed Ibraahim Axmed

I have heard so much about Muraayad Garaad, the mother of the Somali Feminist movement, it is refreshing to finally see her face. She looks every bit as dignified as I imagined her to be and if her speaking is a reflection of her intellect, the lady was gifted indeed.

True, Every time somali sheikhs are asked about women and the bleaching of their skin they say why would they even do it somali women have beautiful different skin tones. I guess skin changes with bleach and the environment you live in.

Wow! I remember this and recognize a family member in one of the takes.

This was one of the last social initiatives that the government was working on.

If I remember correctly, it was implemented through the health ministry and ururka hooyooyinka. Thanks for posting it.
