Too bossy to make love: Women who make all the decisions at home pay the price in passion

Are you a wife who likes to wear the trousers at home? Beware! You could pay for it in the bedroom.

Women who like to take all the household decisions can find themselves waiting 100 times longer for passion than those who do things jointly with their partner, according to a study.

Such decision-making includes the daily and weekly budget, food shopping, visiting friends and dealing with doctors’ appointments.

Researchers looked at women in six African countries where roles are clearly defined – they either look after the household completely or make joint decisions with their husband.


The study noted the level of decision-making and then compared it with the women’s own accounts of their sexual relationships. And it found there was a clear link between those homemakers who take charge and the amount of sex they had.

However, the researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore suggest the fall off in sex could be by choice.

Rather than a side effect of men being turned off by a bossy wife, they say women might be taking control in the bedroom too, protecting their ‘sexual rights’.

Research team associate professor Michelle Hindin said: ‘As the number of decisions in which a women had the final say increased, the mean and median time since most recent sex also increased by three to 100-fold.
‘The more decisions a woman reported making on her own, as compared to joint decision making, the less likely she was to have sex and the longer it was since she last had sexual intercourse.’
Kim Cattrall, 55, best known for playing headstrong Samantha Jones in Sex and the City, has spoken out in the past about her unsatisfactory love life.

‘I always had a sexy image, on camera, but I was not having a fabulous sex life,’ she said.

‘Everyone expects great-looking guys and women to be having great sex – that’s not true. It is one thing to have patience and build up a good sexual relationship, through love but, with some men – I would say, in my experience, the majority of men – it is just never going to happen.’

Study co-author Carie Muntifering said: ‘Understanding how women’s position in the household influences their sexual activity may be an essential piece in protecting the sexual rights of women and helping them to achieve a sexual life that is safe and pleasurable.’
