Wounded Police chief in Hospital After Latest Attack
Unknown gunmen have shot and wounded the head of Puntland's Special Protection Unit in Bosaso, officials told Somalia Report Saturday.
“Four men armed with pistols targeted the chief (Mursal Haji Saleeban) while he was with one bodyguard in Bosaso; they wounded both the chief and his body guard,” Puntland’s police boss, General Ali nur Omar, said. “We captured one of the four gunmen; he is being interviewed and we think this is an al-Shabaab action."
Saleeban in hospital with a head wound, although it is not clear how serious his condition is. The SPU is charged with the protection of foreigners.
The attack is the latest in a long-running series of assassinations and attempted assassinations on Puntland officials, which combined with clan unrest and clashes with militia have raised fears over the security of the relatively peaceful breakaway region.
