Somaliland Kicks Somalis Out of Sool
Somaliland security forces in Sool region forcibly deported at least 100 Somalis who came to the region after they were internally displaced from southern Somalia due to famine, drought and pressure from al-Shabaab insurgents.
The deported were they taken to the Somaliland border by truck, according to a resident of Las Anod district. They arrived in Tuka Raqa village, 30 km east of Las Anod
"I saw policemen arresting people who came from southern Somalia. The police forced them to climb up into the trucks, but I don’t know to where they have been deported," Mohamed Yahye, a resident in Las Anod, district told Somalia Report.
This event comes after Ahmed Ibrahim Muse, the chairman of Las Anod appeals court, was killed by unknown gunmen. This caused the Somaliland administration to blame the IDPs for sparking insecurity in Sool.
"We don’t want to blame all the displaced people who live and work here. We are targeting only the people from Bay and Bakool Regions, especially youth, because these people are the enemies of Somaliland so we are deporting them from our region to avoid their problems," Kayse Ahmed Hajji Hussein, Somaliland Governor of Lasanod district, told local media yesterday. Somaliland authorities confirmed the deportations and vowed to continue the operation, but refused to provide further details to Somalia Report.
Also it is unclear whether all of the deported are from Bay and Bakol regions as the governor claimed, or if they had committed any crimes.
