should the name of the somaliland currency be changed?

I think YES and it should be changed to GEEL (the camel). the name shilling is so colonial and still keeps somaliland somewhat politically connected to somalia.

I think the name GEEL (the camel ) has deep rooted heritage in somaliland (not exclusivelly - just had to point that out before the anti S/L crew makes too much fuss out of nothing :) ) ............. and the GEEL was once THE currency to measure once wealth. And men without GEEL were frowned upon as are people without money are frowned upon and/or are pityied today's societies.

I am not suggesting here for people to start exchanging camels for goods and services but to change the name of the somaliland currency from the lame shilling which has no historical meaning or value in terms of Somali culture and change it to GEEL.

I will write a more extensive case for this idea and more detailed reason for the case insha allah some other time when I have the time.

but mean time lets see your thoughts on this

I am vehemently against the use of SOMALILAND as the name of our country I am also against the use of the name Shilling as our currency. Every onther country is getting rid of signs of colonialism and we are revelling in it. No pride whatsoever  .

Why don't we change it to Dinar and dirham. We could use Dinar as the currency and the Dirham as the subunit?

why not be original and invent our own unique currency name, and one that is historicall and culturally significant.

I propose the name GEEL.

this is what it sound like:

buyer: waar ninyow waa imisa garankaa cas ee Arsenal?
selle: gudoomiye waa 200 oo geel oo hal la' ( meaning G199) G=GEEL.

No shillings is fine and also Somaliland is fine. Shillings is used in somaliland, somalia, kenya, tanzania and uganda.

However, I would love for somaliland (insha'allah when we are a recognised state) to buy gold dinars and silvar dirhams and use it as a reserve currency because this paper money has no value and can increase and decrease in value rapidly. Use it alongside our SL Shillings

You guys are hopeless walaahi.

Why don't we call our country swakukuland and we can have FRANCs, MARKs and dollars as national currency.

That was sarcasm incase you're wondering. And yes I'm talking to you Emperior....

My point is we are a muslim country and our culture should reflect that The dinar and dirham is perfect for a currency. This worship of anything ingiriis is pathetic and embarrassing. Especially when they wouldn't even to find you on a map.

Ninyoho I agree with you 100% percent. Here are some better options:

- Isaaqland (My favorite!)
- Queen Elizabeth's state of Absolute Monarchy
- English wannabes
- Habar some clan

The list goes on but this will do for now.
