Let us help each other denounce tribalism.
I think we all realize the biggest problem with Somali society, more than anything else, is clannism and it seems even those of us who are aware of this fact, never really tackle it. Even if we have reached the position that it is inherently a negative phenomenon, we never really seem to rise beyond the primitive pull within us encoded deep in our DNA as part of the Somali people. Certainly I am cognizant of the fact that I happen to be one of the biggest sources of tribal rhetoric and its proliferation in this forum and while claiming to be an endorser of progressive values I have realized I am a bit uncomfortable with the dissonance between that which I preach and that which I practice. Because of this reason, I want to put up a challenge here to our young Somali diasporans, including myself, to not only denounce tribalism but also help each other in that endeavor.
I think also a difference has to be made between qabiil (clan) and qabyaalad (politicization of clan). While we are all from different sections of the Somali nation and should recognize our heritage, by tribalism I define as qabyaalad or that which combines our pedigree with the modes and methods and facets of our perspective in politics as it relates to Somalia or the Somali people. Oftentimes I have failed considerably in this separation and it is in this respect, I wish now not only to denounce it but also advise my other brothers and sisters in this forum as well to denounce it and hold each other accountable in this ambition.
Please, no negativity, no rehashing the past. Let us see what we can achieve; after all if we cannot succeed in this cause here in our small cyber world, how then can we expect our people in the motherland to do so? From henceforward I denounce tribalism.

Re: Let us help each other denounce tribalism.
Tribalism literally is the root cause of the breakdown of Somalis state and the reason why conditions in Somalia have reached these levels why, and it seems the longer Somalis hold on to it the more inescapable this status quo will be.

Estarix, obviously there isn't a magic cure and the issue doesn't have a one size fits all kind of solution but a small step like this would go a long way in that goal.
Emperior, the first people to fly were the Wright brothers who happen to be E1b1b1 so maybe certainly most Somalis are part of the "first tribe" to fly.

Welcome back son

Yes denounce only the negative part of tribalism and focus on the positive.

Re: Let us help each other denounce tribalism.
Somali conflict is not national, Somalias conflict is not one that is fought for ideology, power ( they may intertwine with clan groups but the base of it will be clan) Somalia's problem stems from clan (regionalism), the difference is that whenever conflict brews it hits Somalis as if they were a pack of ethnic group; thus the violence is concentrated towards a clan level and it will behave in a clan manner, so once a clan is impacted it will inevitably feel grievances; leading to more violence leading inevitably to more division, leading to hatred between people, leading to statelessness, the its a long cycle and this alienation, hatred between Somali groups (clans) made it so hard for them to come back together since 1991, its a crazy cycle.
What is the short term solution to clan ism?

Voltage,
Lead by example and admit that the MSB regime committed massive human rights violations and murders that contributed to the state of collapse in Somalia.
The problem I have observed with most Somalis is that each clan thinks they are the only unique victim of the conflict and deny the grievances of others.

Development and progress. People back home are sick and tired of this cycle and if you give them the opportunity they will willingly take it. let's use the Farmaajo as an example,(lets not jump the gun its only an example) people of mugdisho took him in not cos of clan but they saw him as a man who benefited.Estarix wrote: What is the short term solution to clanism?

Murax,
Thanks for making my point. Qabilism is a terrible thing especially when planted in neonates.
