Actually I know Somalis who have lived in Russia. The places tahriib takes you eh :|

Apparently one of the new routes is to go to west africa. take a boat to south America an get to the U.S mexico border. I'm not even kidding :|
The traffic between south america and west africa exists anyway i.e. drug trade. See this link: http://www.eurad.net/en/news/supply_red ... FRjY0z.ips and search the text for "smuggling of Somalis into the United States through Latin America". here is another link: http://refugeeresettlementwatch.wordpre ... to-the-us/

I went back last summer and the stories people will tell about tahriib laa xawla. I remember some kids telling me who were tortured imprisoned and eventually came back from as far afield as Sudan to the middle east. How many linger in foreign prisons. But those who came back came back with a new resolve and vengence determined to achive something in their country so they tend to be and become hard workers.

Tahriib used to be easy, now its extremely difficult.

All the new Somali arrivals to the US did some extreme shit to get here. Most of us in the early days came straight from Somalia or Kenya. Now its not the same. All the new arrivals the last 5 years came via Europe (I'm not talking about UK, Sweden, Holland, I'm talking about Greece, Italy and other shit holes), middle east, or South America. I know a group of Somali guys who crossed from South Africa to Brazil, then to Cuba, then Mexico, and drove into the US. Crazy shit.

Monk, i've heard some really sad stories about those that have gone through the tahriib. Everyone nowadays seems to be Turkey, Greece and then eventually through Italy and Serbia.

I was just reading a report on the Somali diaspora. o.k brace yourself... The Somali population of London alone was estimated to be 110,000 strong in 2009! :shock:

Some more statistics:

- Between 2001 and 2009, 50,000 Somalis have gained british citizenship.

- In 2006, there were 21,000 ethnically somali students across london primary and secondary schools.

- In 2006, official government survey found that 82,300, Somalia born Somalis reside in England. The survey stresses that this does not include (1) Somalis born in the U.K (2) OR born in other european countries (3) OR born ANYWHERE outside Somalia! (when you add all the somalis born in the U.K as well as all those born in european and arab countries, numbers will be huge). (To give you an idea U.K somalis, how many of your siblings/cousins/nephews are born in u.k; now add Somalis born in e.u; now add SOmalis born in carabaha; not add somalis born everywhere else!).

Local authority - Somali born population 2001 - Recent estimates (2003-2007) (min<->max)
Ealing (London) - 3,045 - 11,000 <-> 15,000
Tower Hamlets (London) 1,353 - 15,000
Sheffield 1,306 - 3,000 <–> 5,000
Islington (London) 1,226 - 2,500 <-> 4,000
Manchester 1,225 - 5,000 <–> 6,000
Leicester 872 - 15,000
Birmingham 819 - 3,000 <–> 4,000
Liverpool 678 - 3,000 <–> 5,00021

I was at a Somali event a year ago and the Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Immigration said that there are 200,000 ethnic Somalis that reside in Canada and over half of those live Toronto and its suburbs alone.

One thing I like about Somalis in Canada and the USA are that a lot of the kids are university or community college educated and most of the parents work. Or if the kids don't go to schooling after high school, they go straight to the workforce.

The same cannot be said about the Somalis in the UK and the rest of Europe. Most of them chill at the khat spots and the majority of them are welfare cases.

Yh kudos to American Somalis and the Somalis of Americas hat. It depends on the society in which they integrate though. For example in America/Canada, the welfare system is not as generous as say the nanny state that is the u.k. It is a matter of they have to work. Whereas in the U.K you can live your entire life without working and you'll be just fine :|

I wouldnt put U.K somalis and Europe Somalis in the same basket sxb. E.u somalis are hardworkers. But unfortunately u.k somalis have infected some of the e.u somalis.

True, I can't blame the Somalis of Europe and UK. The government did not integrate them properly.

but one thing I respect of Somalis in UK and Euope is that they can speak Somali and have somali culture.

The somalis of north america (the ones born here or came here young after the war) can't speak a lick of Somali and have no Somali culture. The problem with us is too much integration.

We also do not know our clans as well. I guess that is a good thing to an extent. Clannism can easily be turned into a disease. UK Somali kids all know their clans and it gets to the point where you see them wearing t-shirts with their clans. Names on it. I've seen this in London a few times. Its wrong.

I wonder why Somalis the N.america think differently than sOmalis in UK or europe.

The young people there are very qabiil minded. Not all but a lot. Nothing wrong with knowing ur clan but when you have to put the name of ur clan on ur tshirt... Its kind of pathetic and disgusting.

Never seen so many fresh off the boat minded somalis who were born in Europe
