Post by ZubeirAwal »

What kinda retard will think this minor port with almost no cargo containers on the Dock,is bigger and busier then the main port of Berbera which has dozens of cargo containers on its dock?

abukar, search BBC english language portal and you may find some report they did on these two port cities. They concluded Bosaso is growing population-wise while Berbera is declining.

I don't know abour berbera but Bosaso port works 24 hour/7 (dayime import/night time export) days a week because it serves almost all southern Somalia. You can see vehicles going to Celasha Biyaha and livestock from Bay at any given day.

Without preconditions, one can do a simple research to find out these port's yearly volume. in 2010 Bosaso port exported 1.8 million male camels.

AbdiIsmail,

Lets not blame Ciise Muse. Its the culture of corruption which kills trade at Berbera port. The same is happening in Xamar. Bosaaso and Kismayo are the two cheapest places to offload cargo in Somalia. Their duties are the lowest, clearance is a breeze and you are on your way with your cargo.

Good luck with SL & TFG ports.

Corruption is everywhere lakiin it's their lack of interest in building and renovating the city (which I think is the most important in SL) and their obstruction of businesses coming in to revitalise the place. Lakiin I've got an axe to grind with them so don't mind me.

Of the 1.4 Billion dollar GDP of Djbouti, nearly 1billion is from their port activity.

Innovation is required to solve the problem of Taxing a somali. Instead of taxing the man directly spread that tax across other products/services he may require while he is on business.

Just don't call it a tax.

The busiest port in Somalia is Ceel Macaan and it doesn't even have a harbor, its just an open beach. Infrastructure means nothing if you have nothing to offer. No one except Ethiopians and a few Hargeysa clans use Berbera but all of Somalia and all the Somalis in Galbeed, even half of Somaliland uses Bosaso.

Monk,

Who would want to deal with bureaucracy and pay exorbitant duties and fees ? Anything run by government in Somalia is mismanaged and highly inefficient.

Abdiwahab, you're right.

According to a recent UN report:

Elevated import taxes imposed by Transitional Federal Government authorities, believed to be among the highest in the region, serve to aggravate the
problem. In early 2011, a dispute erupted between the Mogadishu port authorities and the Somali traders who objected to what they perceived to be excessive taxation and inefficiency of the port authorities. Consequently, many Somali traders avoid Mogadishu, preferring to discharge their cargoes at Kismaayo or other ports where import taxes are lower. For example, Mogadishu port authorities charge an import duty in the amount of $1,300 on a mid-size vehicle. At Kismaayo, Al-Shabaab charges only $200. Even if the transporter then wishes to deliver the vehicle to Mogadishu, it costs another $200, including driver fees, fuel and miscellaneous expenses, to drive the car from Kismaayo to Mogadishu.
