Secularist would argue that Imam Mahdi is from the 7th century in theory and if his gonna survive in modern times his gonna have to adopt progressive muslim values and altered Quran (through flawed interpretation).

i think there is paranoia on both sides. remember imam mahdi will come at a time of confusion where people will be really confused.
