Tom Hanks Desperately Seeking Somalis

Sony Pictures is seeking Somalis in Minneapolis to appear in a new Tom Hanks movie, “Capt. Phillips.”

Auditions will be held Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Brian Coyle Center. The casting call is for black actors or non-actors, preferably born in Africa.

The roles are for men ages 15 to 45, women ages 20 to 30, and boys ages 7 to 10. Those auditioning should bring a current photo, if available. Photos will not be returned.

Hanks is slated to play the lead of Richard Phillips, a cargo ship captain held hostage by Somali pirates for several days in 2009. Phillips eventually was rescued when a Navy sharpshooter picked off three of the pirates.

Minneapolis was chosen for auditions because of its large Somali population.

Sony Pictures was seeking Somalis in Minneapolis to appear in a new Tom Hanks movie, “Capt. Phillips.”, when a fight broke out on the set of the auditions. The quiet Saturday afternoon soon turned violent when an argument over a water fountain escalated and a brawl erupted between members of rival clans vying for who's gonna drink the water first.

"They're animals", a visibly shaken Hanks told members of the media following the cancelation of auditions and the movie. "They don't listen to instructions, continue to talk to each other while being addressed and I think one of them stole my wallet. I hate them".

Reports show Sulaiman Abdulkadir, a 42 year-old recent arrival from Eden Prarie MN, beat an individual into a coma with a microphone stand. The victim has been identified as 7 year-old Amina Dahir of Hennipin County. It is believed the argument started between these two individuals and later swelled to include their respective clans. Police are investigating.
