Maryland Tops the nation in terms of millionaires

The Free Line state

Here’s some good news for Marylanders: We’re rich!

Well, not all of us. Certainly not the blogger currently disseminating this information. But a lot of us are rich. Very rich. So rich that, get this: Maryland, for the first time, now has more millionaires per total households than any other state in the country.

Really. I’m not making this up. Even the Washington Examiner says so. At the same time I’m telling you how rich we are, there is probably a great deal of self-loathing unfolding in Hawaii because people there have been the richest in the country since 2008. (They still have better scenery, though.)

So how rich are we?

According to Phoenix Marketing International, a global marketing firm, 7.22 percent of Maryland households are millionaires. Hawaii: 7.21 percent. Yes, I realize how close this competition is. But think about how far we’ve come: In 2006, Maryland millionaires made up 6.21 percent of households.

It’s rather obvious to anyone who lives in the region that our economy benefits from the mostly stable, well-paying jobs connected to the government — whether they be in law firms, contracting firms, research facilities, or biotech companies. There is a good number of private equity firms around here, too. The state once even had a special tax for millionaires.

But the news about Maryland’s moneybags (referring to liquid assets) comes as the country is grappling with questions about the widening wealth gap between the rich and everyone else. The Occupy Wall Street movement is simmering in downtown D.C. — and around the country. And the haves and the have-nots have never been more far apart, as this terrific series from The Washington Post explained earlier this year.

Very true

I been to Maryland before and I can say Maryland has the wealthiest people I have seen.

Even the Somalis there are ballin out of their ass or at least have some class

You can't be a loser and live in Maryland

The hoyoos over there got PhD's and the fathers were all government officials back two decades ago.

Only thing about maryland that was so strange to me was that that whole state is home to a collection of small towns. The biggest city there is smaller than my toronto suburb I reside in

And marylanders have an identity crisis, they all regard themselves as from DC. I guess its metro DC but u never hear a marylander proudly state their from Maryland

That was just my observation

Baltimore is a huge city. You must have only been around Montgomery or Prince George's Counties which are metro DC and people attach themselves more to Washington than the state itself. I'm actually one of those

If you go up towards Baltimore, you will see a change in attitude and people are more Maryland centric and reject the influence of the nation's capital in shaping the identity of the state. Its amazing how two major cities are so close but the people are so different.

One of the criticisms of people saying the University of Maryland should NOT have its flagship campus in PG County was because of how close it is to DC (Roughly 5 miles). But the close proximity to DC is great for students to get out of a college town and experience an international city. The detractors say Univ of Maryland should be in Baltimore where it will exhibit more Maryland pride and what not..

Maryland seems to me like a suburb of DC. I don't regard it as a state.

I was at Bethesda in Maryland.

Walahi what was. Even more cajiibsaan was arlington, virginia

Walahi it took literally 4 minutes to get from dc to virginia

DC, Maryland and virginia should all merge to become a bigger District of Columbia.

Bro, none of these virginians and marylanders repped their state. It was only "DC,DC,DC"

Merge all three into a super duper DC

That'll solve the identity crisis

And yo,

Baltimore is not big man. Looks like no more than 500,000 max live there.

However, Maryland was still the shitttt!!

I've applied to George Mason University for masters and will prolly move to bethesda if all goes well,

I'm assuming george mason is a few minutes from Bethesda.I would guess not toooo long and just an average commute

fighter, Bethesda is like one of the richest areas in Maryland. Baltimore city-wise is much, much, much bigger than DC. DC is a SMALL city compared to the Baltimore in terms of mileage. Population wise they're the same.

But if you go up north, people reject the association with DC. DC area identity extends to Howard and Anne Arundel Counties at most but those are looked more as Baltimore suburbs.

And Virginia's northern part esp Arlington should just become part of DC. It is literally across the river... I don't know why you were so shocked

And George Mason is in Fairfax county man   Bethesda is in Montgomery County, Maryland. You would have to take the beltway to go to school and it would be a LONG commute because of the traffic...

Baltimore... especially the Eastern part of the city is very dangerous and is straight up hood. It is how Northeast and Southeast DC used to be 15 years ago before gentrification happened. Shid, if you put me in SE DC today in the Anacostia section I ain't scared at all... but up towards Baltimore, let me just say I didn't feel like I was in America when I was driving through the East part of town.

My dad's job moved him from working in the DC metro area up to Baltimore metro area and he tells me how strange it is up there because the madows are so much poorer... the cadaans are more country hick, but there are nice ass neighborhoods in the city center and north of town that literally do not have anyone living in them. There's a stigma which means there are opportunities... just as much as DC but without the intense competition.
