What about Electrical/electric?

There are only a handful of unis that offer Petroleum in the uk. Chemical engineering is more popular.

It all depends on where you live and what sector is always on top and booming. So for example in western Canada, the Oil and gas industry is the main field and therefore on a monetary point of view it would be wise to get into either Chemical or Petroleum Engineering.

The status quo however will always be Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical. Get into these and I don't think you will have any major issues finding a job, it might take some time depending on what's your location.
