The Chronicles of Azania Part 4
Taliye Abdiwahab was busy on the phone coordinating the assault. His strategy was very simple. It required that the KDF and Xarakada inflict heavy damage on each other. The Azanians would simply finish off the Xarakada if the Xarakada defeated the KDF. If the KDF won, the Azanians would proceed to form an alliance with them and extract maximum concessions to reassure the weakened KDF that the Azanians would be on their side.
Abdiwahab devised a simple plan to maximize the damage inflicted. He ordered his lead reconnaissance officer Lt. Guhad to identify a vantage point that would seclude the Azanians from the KDF, Xarakada and the American drones. Lt. Guhad knew of a such a spot and soon lead the Azanians on to a wooded cliff overlooking the flat land below where the two sides would encounter each other.
“Taliye, why are we sitting up here when the action is going to be down there ?”
“Guhad, leave the thinking to me. That is why I am the Taliye and you are kii loo taliyo.”
Guhad felt frustrated that Abdiwahab did not share his strategy or information with him. He began resenting his commanding officer. Abdiwahab knew better than to trust an Azanian with secrets.
Just as he predicted, a column of KDF vehicles approached the bottom of the valley from the northeast while dust cloud rose up in the southwest. Abdiwahab reached for his binoculars trying to figure out the identity of the second convoy. It was the Xarakada as shown by the fluttering black flags. The Xarakada were packing serious armaments: armored personnel carriers, Dhunshilkes, B-10s, PKMs, LAWs, RPG 7s and had several truck loads of heavily armed men. The KDF consisted of 10 Humvees with 50 caliber browning, 4 trucks mounted with artillery pieces and an assortment of small antitank missiles.
Commander Meru’s strategy was to surprise the Xarakada and mount an artillery bombardment. He was also counting on his air force for air support to strafe the Xarakada convoy after they were softened up by the bombardment. Commander Meru was on his satellite phone sharing his GPS coordinates with the KAF based out of Wajir to coordinate the airstrikes.
Grandpapakhalif’s key strategy was devious. He knew that the KDF would probably be alerted of his movements by the flying drones. Unknown to his commanders, Grandpapa had sent out a 50 man strong force out the night before to mine the roads and route that he hoped the Kenyans would take. He also hoped to use the terrain against the Kenyans by forcing them to use the most obvious route to escape. He also instructed those men to remain well hidden to prepare for a series of ambushes to corral KDF were into the optimum kill zone. To neutralize the Kenyan airforce, he instructed his men to remain close to the KDF so as to dissuade the pilots from bombing targets so close to their main force. To sum it up, Grandpapa knew the Kenyan pilots’ aim sucked and they did not want to kill their drinking buddies.
The quiet countryside soon broke into an orgy of violence accompanied by the blood curling orchestra. THUD THUD, boom, boom, ssf, sssf. Commander Meru’s heart skipped a beat as bullet flew into his hummer vehicle. He ducked for the floor of the vehicle and remained there until, he was coaxed up by FatimaZahra.
“Commander, have you been hit ?” she whispered into his ear.
“No, no,” said an embarrassed Meru who got up and sat back in his seat. He soon got used to the taps of bullets hitting the armored plates of his vehicle.
A loud explosion was heard behind the Meru’s vehicle. He leaned back to see what the commotion was and saw one of his trucks ablaze. It had been hit by an IED. Another ear piercing explosion hit and a dust plume rose up from the front of the column. Yet another vehicle was hit by an IED.
“Shid, shid, shid” yelled Meru.
“Stop and turn around !”
“Sir, we can not. We are blocked by the truck ….” shouted Fatima Zahra.
Meru was still in a state of shock and was numb with fear. He displayed the signs of being shell shocked and lay dazed.
FatimaZahra quickly swung into action and proceeded to slap Meru back into his senses.
“Sir, sir, get yourself together.”
Meru quickly came around and ordered his men to dismount from their vehicles to engage the enemy. He rightly knew that they were know stationary targets and easy pickings for Xarakada's artillery.
“Get the wrecks out of our way ! Now !” he yelled into his radio.
Meanwhile, Grandpapa ordered his infantry to attack. He sent a wave of men straight towards the Kenyans and ordered his vehicles to retreat from plain view to under the trees to hide them from the sight of the Kenyan airforce who by now would be flying into Somali airspace.
Abdiwahab watched the events unfolding below him. He was intrigued at the retreat of the Xarakada vehicles from the battle. Why would they do that ?
SCREECH ……. The sound of jet engines thundered throughout the valley. Abdiwahab ordered his men to conceal themselves and to throw brown tarpaulins over the vehicles.
“Sons of bitches !”
“Taliye, what is going on ?” asked Pat.
“These sons of bitches are going to fock up my plan.”
“Aren’t you going to be happy that the Xarakada are going to be defeated?”
“Pat, stop talking and command the artillery batteries to start firing towards parked Xarakada vehicles to drive them out. Use the mortars and keep a low profile. ”
Patriot ran quickly to the mortar unit and gave them coordinates to fire into.
The first mortar had a direct hit on a Xarakada technical. It exploded and killed the occupants. The explosion spooked the other Xarakada who began hearing the tell tell signs of mortars, a sharp whirring sound. They panicked and started to drive their vehicles out of the Acacia forest.
The Kenyan pilots saw the Xarakada vehicles speeding out of the thick tree line and began engaging them. They strafed and bombed them in wave after wave attacks which left 80% of the Xarakada vehicles destroyed or immobilized.
Grandpapakhalif went into a fit, yelling and started throwing punches. He wondered who the fock told them to move ! Grandpapa soon realized that there was another party in this conflict. He grabbed some binoculars and started scoping the escarpment for the other party. Grandpapa looked and something caught his eye. It was a man with a white shirt, green camouflage pants who was on the walkie talkie. Upon closer examination, he identified him as the murtad Abdiwahab.
“Son of a bitch !”
“I hate that bastard. He is like a focking cockroach who refuses to die.”
Grandpapa ordered his remaining forces to keep pushing towards the Kenyans as he knew if they made a retreat that they would be easy pickings for the Kenyan airforce or Meru’s men or those of Abdiwahab. He also knew that they did not have enough vehicles to retreat in.
“No, Mujahid, we must leave now.”
“Newyorkawi, what the fock are you saying ?”
“NO ! NO ! We must retreat.”
“Newyorkawi, we never treat, we must die.” Grandpapa reached for his suicide vest.
“You die, we live!” said Newyorkawi who pointed a pistol at Grandpapa.
“You insolent bastard, how dare you disobey me !”
“Mujahid, your days of ordering us are over. If you want to sacrifice your life, you run down there.”
Grandpapakhalif knew he had no option but to go it alone. Yet doubt crept into his mind. Would he serve the jihad well as a homicide bomber or if he lived to train many more ? He rationalized his way out of killing himself and agreed to Newyorkawi’s order.
In less than half an hour, the Xarakada started a disorderly retreat. They ran off by foot towards the thicket. As predicted by Grandpapa, they were easy pickings and were decimated by the KDF, Azanians, and the airforce.
The battle had ended with a stinging defeat for the Xarakada. The KDF also sustained serious losses of assets and manpower. The Azanians came out of the battle with no major damage and loss of life.
Abdiwahab swung into action and contacted Commander Meru via VHF radio.
“Commander Meru, this is Admiral Abdiwahab of the Azanian Liberation Force!” crackled a deep voice.
“Bwana Abdiwahab, mambo, asante sana ! (Greetings brother Abdiwahab, thank you) ! replied Commander Meru.
“Commander Meru, let us meet this evening to discuss cooperation.”
“Admiral, of course anytime, I invite you and your men to dinner.”
Abdiwahab sat back and relished the easy victory for him. He had the Kenyans were he wanted them, the Xarakada were weakened and all at little cost to him.

Re: The Chronicles of Azania Part 4
excellent grasp of small unit tactics Abdi
its ironic that a retreating party will lose heavily to airpower, when a suicidal attack on the attacking party will actually leave more of them alive..
when inn doubt attack, and keep hugging your enemy close when their planes and drones are overhead and try to slink away in the chaos...

Gurey,
Alas, it takes nerve and guts to not flee.
Cumar,
It ain't over. Part 5 will see a change of fortunes.
