Goal Programme - Somali Football Federation - 2006

Football in Somalia

Somalia, a relatively young country that was shattered by the effects of civil war, has so far had little opportunity to make a name for itself in the footballing world. Founded in 1969, the Somali Football Federation joined FIFA later the same year before becoming a member of the Confederation of African Football in 1975. Despite difficult circumstances, 1972 saw the launch of a domestic league championship with four regional tournaments. The championship was relaunched in the spring of 2008 after a hiatus of 18 years. Success in international football has not been forthcoming either as the national team has yet to qualify for either the FIFA World Cup? or the Africa Cup of Nations. In stark contrast to other African countries, no Somali footballer has yet made his mark in a European league or on another continent. Nevertheless, the work that is currently underway to rebuild the football infrastructure provides hope that the underestimated Somali football scene will soon gain in stature.

The Goal project

Part of the highly demanding restructuring work in a country ravaged by a long civil war is to rebuild the footballing infrastructure. There are scarcely any stadiums left and only a few pitches are playable. As an amendment to the project that was submitted on 4 February 2008, on 22 October 2008 the Goal Bureau approved the construction of new stands in the Benadir stadium in Mogadishu. At the same time, an artificial turf pitch will be laid in connection with the Win in Africa with Africa programme, thus enabling the return of international matches to Somalia.

Nothing will ever become right with Mogadishu until it is returned to the correct people.

My clan brought independence to Somalia while yours was protesting against Somalia's new government just hours after independence.
