South vs North dialects clash
After getting off work today, I along with two friends of mine decided to go to the gym and play ball. One of the guys is from boorama, and the other is reer xamar cad cad. After we were done playing, I and the qowdhan remained in the court just taking a breath or two. The reer xamar guy went to the lockers to change. Then realizing his wallet was in the reer xamar guy's locker, the qoowdhan guy called him and asked 'waryaa xageed joogtaa?' and the reer xamar guy responds with 'sanduuqa nooh' He was on speaker so I started laughing because I knew he meant the lockers. Meanwhile, the qowdhan guy after I explained to him what the guy meant said 'bal maqla hooyadii wasahaan'
My point is why do people from north have difficulties understanding people from the south while those from the south perfectly understand those from the north?
Re: South vs North dialects clash
Understandable for a reer waqooyi to feel lost when reer xamar speak.
To us reer xamar accent sound like patois.

The look on the nigga's face was priceless. Is it because the true pure Somali is spoken in the south because we understand everything yall say and you very little of what we say?
Re: South vs North dialects clash
Correction only reer mudug understand reer waqooyi, The south mainly crack up whenever someone oo reer waqooyi hadlo.

Would you have laughed if the "reer Xamar" guy had said " LOKARKA"? or the Boorama guy would have said " Mother fucker"?
I think somalis understand each other but the problem is when somalis use Italian/Arabic/English words and think they are somali words.
You are told your somali sucks if you don't use the arabic/english/Italian version of words.
If you don't say Kastuumo, the southerners will laugh at you and accuse you of not speaking somali.
If you don't say Xamaamka, the northerners will laugh at you.
Re: South vs North dialects clash
For me the most funniest thing is when me and one of my best friends talk in somali. The nigga was born in somali and stayed their till the age of 14. I was born here and went back like 4 times for summer break. When it comes to af somali I beat his southern ass every time. Walahi today this guy tried to tell me lo is the female cow. I told him no it is called sac. He burst out laughing as if I am wrong. btw am I
. I am 100% sure i am right though and the male cow is dibi
I know lo as like alot of cows or cattle

Re: South vs North dialects clash
the people called rer hamar their somali dialog is like arabic version of lebanese . you can understand their arabic but we dont speak their dialog!
we have couple family friends who visit us who are rer hamar. you may not understand some words but with the sentences you can make some sense and understand it.
if you dont understand, all you can say is: maha ka wadaa such and such, or maha la daha (the word you didnt understand) wa laku fasiraya, and you learned a new thing!! so next time you wont be confused if you heard it again.
life is simply and easy that way.
