STRESSED EXECUTIVES NOW CURSE THE INVENTION OF EMAIL !!!!!!!

Stressed executives now curse the invention of email with huge rise in number of messages

By Colin Fernandez

2nd December 2011

They were supposed to save time and labour.

But now executives curse inventions such as emails, mobile phones and BlackBerrys – even though they admit they cannot live without them.
A survey of managers found that they receive 40 more emails each day compared with ten years ago. For the unluckiest 5 per cent, that figure is 100 extra messages a day.

And the endless stream of emails demanding attention – as well as having a boss who can reach them at any time thanks to mobile phones – is increasing stress.
The poll, of 1,300 members of the Institute of Leadership & Management, found 51 per cent felt more stressed than ten years ago, and almost half said they were putting in longer hours.
Two-thirds reported higher workloads today than in 2001, and two-fifths felt their work-life balance was worse now. Overall, a third stated they were less happy at work.

Managers under 35 were the most stressed group, with 71 per cent reporting an increase in stress over the last ten years as they have progressed up the career ladder.
In the same poll, the mobile topped the list of devices managers wished had not been invented, followed by the BlackBerry.
But while 29 per cent regret the invention of the mobile, 28 per cent say they could not live without it.

Meanwhile the average commute has gone up by eight per cent – increasing to 49 minutes in 2011 from 44 minutes in 2001.
Nearly two-fifths of managers say they now travel a lot more for business within the UK compared to 10 years ago, with only just over a quarter travelling less.

Working at home has gone up too, with just under half of respondents saying they had seen an increase in working outside of the office, while 35 per cent had seen no change and 10 per cent had seen a reduction.
However, the same survey revealed that for many people their relationship with the personal computer, laptop and mobile phone is something of a love-hate relationship.
These three devices were also the devices that managers feel they could not do without.
Peter Cheese, chairman of the Institute of Leadership & Management, said: 'Over the last 10 years, the workplace has become much more challenging for managers.
Mobile technology brings with it a pressure to respond quickly and a temptation to work longer hours which is impacting on stress levels.
'While technology also offers a huge opportunity for organisations to enable staff to work smarter, the fact that business travel and commuting times are increasing shows that many firms are missing that opportunity.'
