30,000 French women are advised to remove their breast implants over new cancer fears

'Low quality' implants contain industrial silicone designed for computers and electronic devices

France is to order 30,000 women to have their breast implants removed over fears they could cause cancer.
Tens of thousands of women in Britain and Spain are also said to have the 'low grade' silicone implants, which French experts have linked to breast cancer.
But British experts have branded the French reaction to the scare as 'extreme' and urged women not to panic.

In France, daily newspaper Liberation said that the government had confirmed it would be ordering any woman with implants made by Poly Implant Prosthesis (PIP) to go back for surgery to have them removed.

The bill for the operation would be paid by the government, France's Chief Health Officer Jean-Yves Grall told the newspaper.
But the state would not pay for new implants to be replaced unless the PIP implants were originally put in following cancer surgery, Dr Grall said.

Eight cases of breast cancer, of which one was fatal, have been linked to the implants from the PIP laboratories in southern France.
PIP was a world leader in implant production until it was discovered it used industrial silicone - designed for computers and electronic devices - instead of medical-grade fillers, and the compnay was closed down last year.
Another 2,000 women have so far filed legal complaints against PIP, Liberation said.
The order from the government telling all women with the implants would be issued 'within days' Dr Grall told Liberation.
Leading French plastic surgeon Professor Laurent Lantieri added: 'We are faced with a health crisis linked to a scam. The whole profession is aware of it.'
French government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse added: 'We are in the process of evaluating these breast implants, given the cancer risks.
'It is a matter of urgency that all women who have had these PIP implants are identified and the implants removed.
'If this becomes a public health emergency then any surgical costs will be covered by the social security.'
In Britain, officials denied there was any link to breast cancer and said the UK would not be any order to have them taken out.
A spokesman for the British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said: 'All evidence has been reviewed and that there is insufficient evidence to indicate any association with cancer.
'Additionally, the MHRA worked with the Cancer Registry and could find no evidence for any association.'

British plastic surgeon Douglas McGeorge, former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) said it if women were concerned for their health, they should consult their surgeons.
But he said he was 'surprised' by the French order to have them removed.
He added: 'It does seem rather an extreme measure.
'One death among tens of thousands of patients with implants is certainly not a case for blue flashing lights.
'There is no evidence of an association with cancer and women with these implants should not panic.
'Most of the handful of cancer cases supposedly linked to the PIP prostheses were benign and the women have recovered.'
