an ethical question....
ok. this is what had happened two days ago:
i was in a line at one of the local Somali stores wanting to buy a phone card. also in the line, at the same time, were an Oromo lady with two children. the lady was in front of me and she was holding anjera in her right hand. the anjera was loosely wrapped in a pastry bag and she held the bag at the edge. then all of a sudden the anjera slid out of the pastry bag and onto the floor. she seemed shocked and looked around to see if someone was looking at her. when she glanced to my side, i acted like i didn't see anything. after this quick visual inspection, she put the anjera back into the bag, took it, put it back on the shelf and grabbed a new one without ever telling the store owner who was busy helping other customers and i was the only witnessing it.
first, i didn't make a big deal of it. but when she returned the product to the shelf and got another one without ever telling the store owner, i was shocked and didn't know what to do!!! after mulling what to do about it, i decided not say anything and left. i reached this conclusion for one reason: i thought telling the store lady about what this customer was doing could have produce undesired outcome. and also i didn't wanted to create a greater problem and i thought the advantages of the store owner outweighed everything else. it was really hard for me to do that because usually i don't keep quite when i see something like that taking place.
so my question is: if you were in that situation, what would you have done?

Your conclusion is what I would have done myself.
Plus, that's a good reason to cook your own food and not to buy cooked meal from outside.

I'll be honest, if she wasn't Muslim and didn't have kids with her, I'd say something along the lines of
"Are you really gunna put that back? Really?"
..depending on my mood that day. When I'm ticked off and fatalism takes over, anxiety goes out the door lol.

There are a lot thing we walk away from and later think abt it. I have had lots of those moments. I witnessed someone taking a lighter at a store and i kinda busted him. Ended up buying one for him after.I felt horrible.barakaboy10 wrote:wallahi i thought about buying it, then throwing it in the garbage but i was really late for work.Beans wrote:Knowing maself,i would have either bought that specific bag of injera and throw it or said something to the store owner.

Its best you didn't tell the owner.
If you told the owner about this situation, the Oromo lady would have been shamed and humiliated, the owner would have had to throw it in the garbage (losing $$ and time to make it) and you would have felt like a bitch for shaming the Oromo and wasting the time and money of the owner.
Since you didn't tell, everyone wins.
Another thing, I don't understand why people get worked up over this issue. We have eaten fallen food billions of times but we just don't know it. We have ate burgers that have been spit on by McDonalds workers. We have eaten expired food before (by accident or people may do it on purpose). We can't think about these issues. If it happens, it happens. Its best NOT to know. If you see something happen, turn the other cheek.
Yeah its nasty, but that's the reality of eating food outside.
Did you know feces can be found in your toothbrush? Every time you flush your toilet, the toilet releases a spray and that spray contains feces. And this doesn't only occur to toothbrushes in the washroom. Toothbrushes that are placed a few meters from the washroom will have feces on it. And we brush our teeth everyday lool.
Moral: food that falls on floor, food that is spat on, etc etc etc is not gonna kill ya

PS: But seriously, I always had that thought about the Fast food places in the back of my mind & is a reason I am not a big fan of them.
