An In Dept Review Of The 77 War: A Must Watch.
If You Have The Time It's More Than Worth The Watch. Details Of 1977 War And The Rise Of Rebel Movements. Not From The Prospective Of An Historian But Rather An Eye Witness And A History Maker Himself.
If You Really Want To Get The Best Picture Of The 77 War, Than The Colonel Who Led 30,000 Troops On The Front Line Tells It All.
Universal T.V Takes A Look Back On Somali History With A Somali Icon Who Has Seen It All First Hand.
Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed Interview on 1977 and more
I'm reading the book which has more details about him and Siad Barre during the Italian Trusteeship where he worked under him. I've been told one event in 1956 sheds some light onto Siad Barre's mindset about the political discourse at the time but I'll see how the book turns out.
Here he talks about his relationship with Aideed and Siad Barre, 1977 War and how he led his unit to its intended target which was 70 km from Addis Ababa.

Politically yes, but militarily Somalia gave Ethiopia a beat down that is still engraved in their minds.

Re: An In Dept Review Of The 77 War: A Must Watch.
But Somalia was military defeated by Cuba and Russia in 1978.
Many somali authors like:Jama Mohamed Ghalib and Hussein Ali Dualeh say Somalia was military defeated in 1978.
"Search for a new Somali identity"
Hussein Dualeh
Here, is a good example of History repeating itself, that when the Somali forces over-run Ethiopia in 1977, knocking at the gates of Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa, it was the Cuban, East German and Russian forces that came to the rescue of Ethiopia

Look at these sources:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogaden_War
http://www.acig.info/CMS/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=47The expected Ethiopian-Cuban attack occurred in early February; however, it was accompanied by a second attack that the Somalis did not expect. A column of Ethiopian and Cuban troops crossed northeast into the highlands between Jijiga and the border with Somalia, bypassing the SNA-WSLF force defending the Marda Pass. The attackers were thus able to assault from two directions in a "pincer" action, allowing the re-capture of Jijiga in only two days while killing 3,000 defenders. The Somali defense collapsed and every major Ethiopian town was recaptured in the following weeks. Recognizing that his position was untenable, Siad Barre ordered the SNA to retreat back into Somalia on 9 March 1978, although Rene LaFort claims that the Somalis, having foreseen the inevitable, had already withdrawn its heavy weapons. The last significant Somali unit left Ethiopia on 15 March 1978, marking the end of the war.
Effects of the war
Following the withdrawal of the SNA, the WSLF continued their insurgency. By May 1980, the rebels, with the assistance of a small number of SNA soldiers who continued to help the guerilla war, controlled a substantial region of the Ogaden. However by 1981 the insurgents were reduced to sporadic hit-and-run attacks and were finally defeated
The Somalis fought bravely, but they had little armour on their own, no air cover and dwindling stocks of ammunition. "They were sitting ducks. They didn't have a chance", explained one military expert close to the Ethiopian high command in Mogadishu to foreing media.
After learning about the rout at Jijiga, Barre immediately announced that all Somali troops would be withdrawn from Ethiopia. It was too late: suffering catastrophic losses, the remaining Somali units dropped their weapons, fleeing north-east in complete disarray, pursued by Cuban tanks which drove through Jijiga and continued eastwards at a high pace. Behind them two Ethiopian divisions immediately started mopping-up operations, re-occupying Ogaden within the following week, and concluding their operations in the Jijiga area by 14 March.

Re: An In Dept Review Of The 77 War: A Must Watch.
A/Y spoke in length about the Ogaden War, he commanded 30,000 troops on the front line and was within 70km of Addis Ababa. The A/Y forces suffered the least causalities in the entire Somali Army. He said the objective of the Somali government was to go beyond liberating Ogadenia and to actually capture the Ethiopian capital and to rule the raw meat eating animals.luis1 wrote:I dont understand Somali language.Somalian_boqor:

The biggest problem faced by the Somali forces was miss-communication which led to a more complex war as commanders on the ground at times did not know each other's position. A/Y spoke about military strategies that did not concoince with reality on the ground being given from military officials in Mogadishu. He further outlined the Government being told by it's allies about Cuba and Russia military intervention on the side of the Ethiopians. The Somali Military suffered it's strongest causalities during the pull out. A/Y Returned to Somalia with 22,000 Troops Out of 30,000 he commanded. While other commanders came back with less than half of those they commanded.
To add insult to injury a paranoid, Government in Mogadishu afraid of being overthrown started to conduct preemptive executions on returning troops. Innocent brave patriotic men false-fully accused of plans to overthrow the regime only to be made an example off. A unit returning from the Northern front in Hargeysa was forced to give up 18 middle to high ranking men. Who were than blind folded and executed. While A/Y unit were defending the border near Gedo after the retreat, he too was approached and ask to give up men in his ranks for execution. He refused to give any of his men up who bravely fought alongside him, in a long bitter war. That become among key elements for his later move to take up arms against the Regime and head SSDF.

Thank you for the answer.
I would like to ask you something about Ogaden War 1977/78
Was Somali Army militarily defeated in Ogaden War by Cuba and Russia?
Was Ogaden War a militar defeat for Somali Army?
I heard Somali Army defeated Ethiopian Army at the beginning of the war but Ethiopia Army with Cuba and Russia aid defeated Somali Army in 1978.
Ahmed Yusuf agrees Somali Army was defeated by Cuba and Russia.
Perhaps you know this somali author: Hussein Ali Dualeh and his book
"From Barre to Aideed: Somalia : the agony of a nation"

The Cuban soldiers, using helicopter gunships, soon managed to totally occupy the Somali-Ethiopian border, while the Somali army was still inside Ethiopia, thus sealing the Somali army's line of retreat
Soon after the defeat of the Somali army in the Ethiopia-Somali war, a group of senior Somali army officers
