Imagine a day when Somali refugee camps look like this

Post by Monk-of-Mogadishu »

This is Devnilebi, a village created for displaced Georgians by their government in the wake of the 2008 South Ossetia war. Imagine a day when Somalis affected by droughts or tsunamis can be scurried immediately and placed into adequate temporary housing like these:

We pray that Allah keeps disaster at bay, but if the worst strikes our people we should also pray that one day we will have the ability to soften the blow for our people.

How about praying we never become refugees in or out of the country?

A REFUGEE CAMP from some obscure, barely known Eastern European Country kawaran. If this was in Somalia and belonged to qabiil X, it would be a unbelievable weapon in the My tuulo shyts on Your tuulo threads.

For Somali standards, Hargeysa is like Singapore, so there's no reason not to brag when some lunatics in Xamar are dragging the country through the shit and you have something decent that you're working with despite the odds against you.

Its not like, with the present conditions, Somalis can do better than Hargeysa, so they have a reason to brag. There's no point in comparing a free country like Georgia, which is also a resource-rich state, with all its opportunities, to Somalia which has none. So for Hargeysa to build houses with the same quality as the "refugee" houses in Georgia is a huge leap in itself.

I knew some idiots would use this as an opportunity to try and downplay what Somalis have overcome and achieved since the civil war, which even foreigners have praised. That being said, Hargeysa looks a lot better than many cities of the same size around the world.

In any case, this is about petro-fueled refugee camps, lets not derail the topic.

One thing I have noticed is MOM has absolutely zero imaan. What an ugly and lifeless township you have shown. I much prefer Somali collapsible dwellings in sunny Somalia bustling with life, animals, and all of God's creatures instead of that big lifeless prison.

For once, I agree with you. Mogadishu's delapidated, bullet-ridden, mortar destroyed shell of a market has more activity and enterprise than all of the eastern european backwaters put together.

There is every reason to compare Yourself with the rest of the World with the exception of the G20 bloc. Georgainians are Human beings just like Somalis so it is stupidity to feel like You cannot hold Yourself accountable by comparing Yourself with other Countres, this case being Georgia. Self realization of Your humble stature sure it might breed humility, but it can also light a fire and instill ambition. There is not a town in Somalia today that has clean running water, sewage or any signifigant industry other then shipping off camels off a port. Be that as it may theres nothing wrong with that everyone starts from somewhere but to sit back and be happy with that is ludicrous. That praise You speak of in regards to foreigners praising Somalia are really back handed compliments. "For a people that don't have a Government...." "For a nation that is Stateless....". To approach the civilized world You wanna hear stuff like "Stable Government with a vibrant, emerging economy..." " type compliments.

Did you know that upto the 1970s South korea had a GDP lower than most african countries including Somalia? Now they are the 11th richest country in the world with a high-tech industry e.g 7 of the 10 biggest shipbuilding companies are South Korean. Somalis could takeover africa and the indian ocean, economics-wise, if we set our minds to it. But as it happens we hate eacheother more than our enemies.

Abdi Ismail, the last time I was in Africa and I couldn't get into Somalia from Nairobi because the ICU-Ethiopia war was going on, I went to the next best thing while in Nairobi which was the baadiye in the NFD near the Somali borders. For three nights I stayed in a baadiye in collapsible dwelling with ood (thorny bushes) as boundary and the goats were frolicking in the "courtyard". I never experienced so much serenity. Time still, the climate was beautiful, the food fresh (milking in front of me and the goat I was eating slaughtered in front of me), stories endless, jokes priceless, people as happy and content as I had never seen before, sleeping on a small matress outside the sky as clear as if I had a magnifier in front of me, life abounding at all times. MOM has never seen that, if he had experienced it he would never trade that prison township for even the Somali collapsible life.

I have never felt any hawo cleaner and more refreshing than somalia's. On my last trip I was very unwell from dubai to djibouti. As soon as I got off at Hargeisa airport, with the breeze blowing I took a deep breath and walaahi I was as fit as a fiddle. The same when I went to the miyi, with the stars as your blanket, the sand as your bed and a cup of caano geel by your side. I went back home like I was at a spa for a couple of weeks. I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world.
