Somali Culture---And Rape-Marriage...Shame File---
In every culture, there are absurdities, and this is one of the Somali cultural absurdities.
It is ridiculis and revolting, because within the Somali culture, a man can marry the women whom he raped, to avoid punishment. I know many would ask, why would any person even think a women would be prepared to marry a person who has assaulted and abused her? She has no choice.
I have spoken to many older Somalis (here and in Somalia), and most of them agreed that according to our cultural practice, a rapist who decides to avoid punishment can only ask to marry his victim, and she is pressured by her family to accept. This is a cultural thing that is associated with many regions and tribes of Somalia. Why would she consider it, she can't, it is not her decission. But others will think for her and decide that she may be better off with the man who raped her, than with her own family. Pressure to get rid of daughters contributes to this mentality, because they are not seen as financial contributors to the family. I think it is clear, as we know it, we Somali men do not treat Somali women fairly.
Any ideas?

Some men will like to justify this as religion just like FGM, but it is a cultural trend, and has nothing to do with Islam. It happens in Somalia and many other countries. In Islam, the only way he can escape punishment is to get forgiveness from the woman, but a genuine one. Mate, as far as I know Christianity encourages that kind of behaviour and not Islam.
Deut 22:28 "If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives."
that's a shame alright.
Screw, yes saaxib it is shame. But you have changed, edited your initial querry, which I answered, so let me rephrase it; "is it something to do with religion or culture"?

Discuss it with the oldies, the traditionalists. It exists in Somalia and it has all to do with the family/tribal honour.
yeah i did edit my reply. but thanx for answering my question. like 1mansquad, i've never heard of rapists marrying their victims before, thats just Neanderthall if you ask me.
Mate, are you implying to be an act of dhuuso dere's ancestors?
No, this horrible act is committed by his immediate Somali heritage, and I know that he abhores it too.
Before foreigners start lecturing us about this issue, I would like young diaspora born/bred Somalis encouraging fellow Somalis to abandon that inhumane practice. Reverse dhaqan cellis.

How do you treat them?
What is the use of giving you an answer, when LionHeart thinks that you are me, and all I want is to choke you till you promise never to stalk again AMAT-ALLAH.
Ask your Imaam.

"That's awful, how can they get to fuc*k their victims"
Marie
There is something wrong with this question. Reminds me of my French History class in High School, and Marie Antoinette (Ina-Baxar correct me if I'm wrong);
"Why can't they eat cakes"?
Some men/women will f..k anything. That is not the point here.
Marie
Have you seen the Santana song that I and Screw posted and dedicated to your nick? Why would a Scandanevian Somali girl like you pick up that kind of a nick?
Yeah....U meant the queen of France during the French Revolution? The one and only Marie Antoinnete.
Im a big fan of Santana, and I happen to like that song, speaking of it------> Thanks
for remainding me that song!
Marie
Yes, that is the queen. Wow, good to see Somalis who like Santana. His sole message on his Australian Tour was "NO To Iraq War, and No To GWB", that is what I call a real artist. Furthermore, since I was a kid and heard one of his albums "She is a black magic woman", I, suddenly became a fan of Santana.
But in this topic, we agree that we (young Somalis) do share similar kind of "diaspora" Somali cultural system, and wouldn't want to see a woman's life be destroyed for being attacked through no fault of her own. Such a cultural system is illogical, unfair & cruel to the woman. That is what I call reverse dhaqan cellis. We should go to Somalia voluntary , so as to enlighten them.

And till now you are stuck with the one whos is telling the tale, or you couldn't understand the message, and stopped you to add your own response? Please, mention how it could be delievered any tale in your own understanding, and that is due to the fact that we seek your response if that is the case? Just to understand you.
So many tales to tell. If you could only understand; then say kow, then labo and etc.
