Officials from the U.K. and Somalia’s Puntland region are in talks about oil reserves in the north eastern part of the African country, the Observer reported, citing an interview with Abdulkadir Abdi Hashi, minister for international cooperation in the state of Puntland.
U.K. officials will help Somalia “maximize future earnings” from oil, Abdi Hashi was reported to have said. Puntland is expected to produce its first oil next month, according to the report.

Earlier today, Bloomberg L.P., the world’s largest financial news group, run by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, confirmed the Puntland-UK/BP oil details we had reported just a day earlier. Abdulkadir Hashi, Puntland’s minister for international cooperation, had earlier stated that BP was a top candidate for taking Puntland’s oil potential to the next level.
The area of exploration is expected to be offshore, and that BP’s expertise in that area is the biggest criteria for their anticipated involvement in the region. A Somali government official was reported by The Guardian newspaper to have cited Somalia as having over 100 Billion Barrels of crude oil beneath the Indian Ocean.
