Formal Negotiations with Aweys/Abu Mansur has started

The Somali President Sh Sharif Sh Ahmed met with 4 representatives from Aweys & Abu Mansur last night on exploring a way to bring them to the side of the government & already key obstacles have been overcome. It's still too early to know the true significance of this but if successful will go along way in ending the civil war in Somalia.

If this is true, to me it's the best news I have heard so far better than oil discovery!!

I have always wanted the sane members of the alshabaab to negotiate with the government and both groups compromise and come to a reasonable agreement.

Abu Mansuur is a charismatic leader & a great majority of the Al Shabab fighting force pledge allegiance to him; hence having him on board will fundamentally weaken them in their biggest support regions such as Bay & Bakool. It's a tough choice that has to be made but accountability will ultimately come. Getting the 2 most important agitators with Shabab should cement the government's very credible argument that fundamental & crucial progress is being made & that it should continue to operate in the post-Transion August 12, 2012 period.

How long are the Ethiopians/Kenyans/Ugandans/Burundians/Djiboutians willing to die on TFG's cause? Fyi, shababs are very resilient and fluid. They vacate towns and reoccupy when the right moment comes. They vacated all tows and villages in Somalia in ayusuf/ethiopia era and re-emerged when the conditions favored them and captured all southern Somalia - from zero to total dominance in less than a year.

Aweys and Mansur are not a threat to the US otherwise they would've been killed by drones a long time ago.

What did Sharif Ahmed's renunciation of the UIC gain the Wadaad movement ? NOTHING. Tahir Aweys and Mansuur's about shift will not change anything and only alienate them among the Shabab who will move swiftely to discredit them and we will have 2 more discredited Islamists

You've got a point but the context seems different. Shabaab was in a position of much greater strength then, than it is now.

But I can see them getting discredited and getting called murtads if they agree to do this.

I Might be Biased To Suggest That Abu-Mansuur is a rationalist,have shown himself again and again to be a strategist and capable of drawing crowds.He is also a bit clannist which is good as it overrides his ideological inclinations.Cant say about something who enjoys zero influence among his tol and is also a murderer(aways).
