A ceasefire agreement has ceased clashes in Gashamo while discussions to end conflict proceed.

The ceasefire agreement was reached after a meeting at the Ethiopian town of Jigjiga between Sultan Mohamed Hirsi Qani leader of the Habaryonis clan and Abdi Mohamed Omar president of the Zone 5 Somali regional administration.

During the Jigjiga meeting which has helped ease tensions between warring combatants from the new police (Liyuu Police) and a nomadic clan members a number of points were agreed as a prelude to initiating lasting peace and harmony. The points agreed on are:

• An immediate cessation of clashes between the warring combatants

• An immediate meeting to be convened in Jigjiga for talks between leaders from the two warring sides

• A broad tribal reconciliation meeting between members of the warring sides to be held in Gashamo and attended by leaders from the warring tribes, zone 5 president and mediators from the Guurti -Somaliland's upper house of parliament.

Elder Muhumed Aw AhmedThe agreement on this points at the Jigjiga meeting between Sultan Qani and Zone 5 president tensions within villages of Gashamo have cooled and clashes have stopped.

On the other hand a mediation delegation from Somaliland is already in Jigjiga to participate in reconciliation meetings as agreed by Sultan Qani and Abdi Mohamed the zone five Somali administration president.

The elder's team which was dispatched to the area by President Silanyo is led by Elder Muhumed Aw Ahmed the chair of the Guurti's standing committee assisted by Elder Haji Abdikariin Hussein "Abdi-warabe among others. Their mandate is to assist as Somaliland's representative's mediation efforts between the tribal leaders and zone 5 administration

It is widely believed both in Ethiopia and Somaliland that the success of the ongoing mediation is a foregone conclusion owing to the participation of Elder Abdi-warabe who is an expert tribal reconciliation credited with Somaliland's reconciliation process which has made it possible prevalent peaceful co-existence between clans which were in opposites sides during the prolonged war against Dictator Siyad Barre in the 80's.
