Bad timing:

1. January 1991 - World attention diverted to Gulf War - Somalia ignored which made recognition of the coup difficult.

2. December 1992 - After the conclusion of all major fighting in Somalia, UN intervention occurs just when Aidid's power was at its peak and the intervention breathes life into his weakened enemies.

3. 1993- wars with UNOSOM & US

4. 1995 - UNOSOM and US leave


If there was no foreign intervention, Aidid would have been supreme leader because his alliance defeated all major opponents who were broken and ready to make peace.


The SNA and UIC were successful but both had their victories destroyed by foreign forces.

Kismaayo International Airport should be named Maxamed Siyaad Barre Airport (MSB)

tnx awahab. I thought ali mahdi's claim to the throne and subsequent ali/aidid war were the most major setbacks.

if only wanting something to happen would make it happen, I would like the distric of columbia named after my great grand father, but that aint gonna happen. same thing for this.
