KUWAITI AID TO SOMALIA
" ‘Help Somalia solve its worst famine tragedy’
Amir praised for $100 mln aid
KUWAIT CITY, July 21: Somalia, which is located in the Horn of Africa, has been experiencing the worst famine over the last two decades, says Arab Parliament Chairman MP Ali Al-Deqbasi.
In a press statement Thursday, Al-Deqbasi described the current situation in the country as tragic, saying it is the most terrible human disaster in recent history. He praised HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah for donating $100 million to Somalia and for his directive to Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) to prepare two airplanes to transport relief goods and medicines to help the people in that country.
Al-Deqbasi also thanked the Arab League for providing emergency and humanitarian aid for the Somalis on behalf of the Arab Parliament. He appealed to other Arab institutions, Red Crescent societies, European Union and international organizations to help Somalia, which is currently experiencing the worst famine. He pointed out many children in the country are malnourished and a large number of animals that the Somalis depend on were found dead. He said the country continues to grapple with severe food scarcity and lack of water supply, prompting thousands of people to migrate to other nations to escape from the crisis and to improve their living conditions.
Calling on the Somalis to quickly end the internal strife, Al-Deqbasi argued these people must realize that they are considered one of the main causes of the disaster. He stressed the need to open a safe route for the transport of relief goods to save a number of Somalis from starvation.
Commenting on the same issue, Chairman of Human Rights Fundamentals Society Dr Adel Al-Damkhi commended the Amir for his humanitarian gesture. He did not only provide humanitarian aid to the Somalis but he also supports them in their struggle to end famine and poverty. He said this kind of generosity is not new to the Amir, who has always been keen on maintaining Kuwait’s position on humanitarian issues by providing assistance to the needy."
