Sudan’s Defense Minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein says the Sudanese forces have “liberated” and taken control of the main town in the Heglig oil region.


"Our troops were able to liberate Heglig town by force, and captured it at 2:20 pm (1120 GMT) today," the Sudanese official announced on state television on Friday.

"The troops moved towards Heglig carefully so as not to destroy what remains of the infrastructure," he added.

The announcement came shortly after South Sudan said on Friday that its troop would withdraw from the disputed region.

"Our enemy suffered heavy losses in people and equipment," the Sudanese defense minister concluded.

Tension between the two neighboring states escalated after the South seized the oil-rich town along with its oil fields last week.

A historic peace agreement between North and South Sudan signed in 2005 paved the way for an independence referendum in January 2011, in which southerners voted almost unanimously to secede.

South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011, after decades of conflict with the north. The new oil-rich nation is one of the least developed countries in the world, where one in seven children dies before the age of five.

Northern Sudanese really are closer to Somalis ethnically and Religiously so part of Me roots for them. On the other side I always detest calaanimo and our Northern Sudanese bro have displayed inexcusable weakness and ineptness by letting these folks demolish them.

i dont worship sudanes Like you do the people of Sudan are not my Enemy but Basheer and his government are no good and they have been opressing the south sudanese people for years now the south Sudanese have the upper hand and all the oil belongs to them Good on them.

Sudan must really open up its political system, redistribute its wealth equally & really develop its military & forge deeper political ties with China & other emerging players. They have been sleeping for a long time & it's irritating hearing about savage Dinkas defeating them

I agree. Its in the best interest of their people for Bashir and the NCP to go sooner than later. He is looting the nation's wealth dry, overstretching his army and destroying its economy things are not looking good as long as they are around.

Not to mention barely 9 days into it's existence South Sudan made a law banning anyone of Somali origin from doing business or trade in their country out of all the ethnics and tribes in Africa.
