Hey guys how are you all doing? I am doing just fine. :) today I had a little debate with a co worker who happens to be an atheist. the nature of the debate was morality and after a little discussion we both agreed that morality is relative ot varies from person to person. Then we started talking about morals and religion. So I told him that only religioud people have moral worth not atheists. I did this on purpose because some non worshiping people obviously know whats good and whats.bad. So he then asked me if all thats moral to me is handed to me by my religion. I told him no. :| so the question is everything that you consider moral taught to you bythe deen? Also the flip side.

Morality should be autonomous; whether your an atheist or a theist.

Morality is entirely relative to one's upbringing and continuously changing environment. What is immoral today, may be morally applicable tomorrow. Due to this wavering centre of morality, humans are generally unable to be decisive in circumstances. Either morals are abandoned completely, or one willingly removes the variable of choice in a situation and adheres fully to an ideology which specifies a course of action for every instance.

Interesting. So Atheists aren't moral?

I didn't say you have to be a believer to be moral.

I think he's implying that the inherent affinity toward morality is divine.

interesting move. But if it comes from God, then the believers are the only ones that are moral because they look up to God for morals. An atheist does not believe in God and he'd therefore miss the morals from God since he doesn't believe in one which would make his actions immoral.

Why are we making this a personal issue? I don't think what he believes is in question, but only the general source of morality. Unless I misunderstood the OP.

No, it depends on your upbringing and what kind of person you are. Just look at the Al Shabab they are very religious and also one of the least moral in Somalia. Remember the story in the Quran about the very religious muslim woman who abused her cat and the prostitute who was kind to a dog? The prostitute went to haven and the muslim cat lady went to hell.

Morality depends on how you were raised. Religion can help, but you can still be moral and good without it.

I'm only making this a "personal issue" as far as to understand what is his definition of moral. I want to just define the term in it's most basic sense so as to proceed without misunderstandings.
