^The SNM forces were about 3000 before 1988 later on their forces increased to over 10,000. As for the SNA it was estimated atleast half of Somalia's troops were in the north but still got defeated by the SNM and lost majority of the districts and towns, they had to flee.

The weapons of the SNM battalions were varied. The ones that use to operate in the lowlands and hilly areas had T54/55 tanks, Technical vehicles,Howitzer, towed, APC Fiat etc. While those that use to operate in the coastal and mountainous areas of Sanaag use to operate with more light and medium weapons.
The SNM also maintained a small fleet of armed speed boats that operated from Maydh, fifty kilometers northwest of Erigavo, and Xiis, a little west of Maydh. Small arms included 120mm mortars and various assault rifles, such as AK-47s, M-16s, and G-3s.

The isaaqs were deeply in the SNA before the war broke up, plus Somalia had one of the newest weapons in Africa at that time since they were friends with USA.
