Somaliland: Danes to open Consulate in Hargeisa

COPENHAGEN Somalilandsun) – The Danish government has confirmed existence of cordial diplomatic relations with Somaliland.
This was confirmed by The Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Mr. Christian Friis Bach during a meeting with Danish-Somalis in Copenhagen where diverse issues pertinent to Somaliland/Somalia were discussed.
Queried on his government's engagement with Somaliland Mr. Cristian Friis said that relations with the Horn of Africa country are good and his government is currently intervening in various development sectors either directly through the local administration or in partnership with international and Danish organizations.
He revealed that a consulate office will be opened in the capital Hargeisa in order to consolidate the cordial diplomatic relations between the two countries. He stressed that the consulate is as a result of strides made by Somaliland as pertains to security, peace and community development in one of the most volatile regions on earth.
The minister informed that plans to open the consulate are final following appointments of officers who will man it, thus the next step is the actual transfer of personnel and materials from Copenhagen where they are currently operating from to Hargeisa.
The Danish consulate in Somaliland was first announced during a visit to Hargeisa by The Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Mr. Christian Friis Bach in February this year, where he said, "The positive development we see there is fragile, and that is why the international community must support these developments right now."
The program is the first of its kind by a Western country in Somaliland, the foreign ministry added, in an official statement.
Permanently staffed by two advisers in Hargeisa, the Somaliland capital, the Somaliland program office will focus on "security, health, and education efforts in cooperation with Somaliland's elected local government," Bach said
The Danish government is among major contributors to Somaliland reconstruction and development efforts, with interventions especially in education, mine clearance, health etc. that are implemented by the Danish Refugee Council-DRC and the Danish Demining Group-DDG.
The Danes have also been involved in the country's democratization process since inception in 2002 by way of election funding's and provision of international observers.
