It is. You don't HAVE to take out those loans.

You can go to a community college for two years which is a much more reduced price and then transfer to a 4 year institution and complete your last two years. OR you can avoid going to out of state schools.

If you go to Yale, Harvard, or any big Ivy League school like those... the debt may be worth it... if you're doing post-grad work. The undergrad hype from those schools has even died off and kids can't get jobs anymore even with super connections.

There are always other alternatives available to you. Some loans are interest free as long as you can meet certain deadline. If you know you can then by all means indulge yourself but if you can't, then look for other options. To me it's a last resort.
