most people in the horn use this word including oromos, afars, guragge and many others. it is just a butchered form of foreign or foreigner (the peoples of the horn just happen to pronounce the 'g' .

Ferenji was actually used by the turks but was adopted by the arabs. It is actually Franks but by the time it was given by the turks and passed through the egyptians and arabs we got it in the horn as Ferenji's, In egypt and arabs world its Afrangi Or A franki (A frank) when a westerner is refered.
