Marehan expeditions in Jubbaland around the early 1900′s

The Guri or earlier Marehan conquerors, such as Rer Hassan, Hawlraarsame, Soonfure, etc revolted against the British in 1913-4 in Jubbaland. They sent out a plea for support to the rest of Northern Marehan in the central regions and British Somaliland. Acting upon the request, the Northern Marehan sent out a party of supporting forces to assist the Guri against the British. Upon arriving in Jubbaland, they were known as the Galti forces (i.e. second wave of conquerors). The Galti Marehan, such as Rer Ahmed, Talhe, Rer Farah Ugas, Ali Dher, etc were known to have been the first Somalis to bring rifles in to Jubbaland in order to rise against the colonialists. They have started raiding the ‘friendly’ tribes of the Garre and Ogaadeen Somalis as a punishment and warning for those who work with the British.In A Study in the Military History of East and Central Africa, it is mentioned:”South of the plateau lay the countries of the Ogaden and Gurreh. The Galti were soon raiding both, with the natural result that they also sought to arm themselves with rifles, and gun-running across the frontier increased accordingly. Worst of the tree sections was the Ahmed Wet under their chief Shire, who was reported to be one of the Mullah’s followers and consistently refused to meet the government.” [1]

This example of Somali resistance certainly would make the British think twice about imposing their dictates in the northeast for some years to come. Indeed, the presence of so-called recalcitrant Somalis there had much to do with the nature of the cession of Jubaland to Italy in 1925″
