Abudwak Airport Statistics

Post by The`Republic »

Some basic facts about the Abudwak Airport project

-Half a million dollars spent so far
-Largest single contributor is Somali American Women's Development based in Ohio with half a hundred thousand donated
-1,300 meters of asphalt runway laid down so far, 1, 000 left to go
-When completed it will have the largest capacity runway in the area including Bay, Bakool, Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan, Galgaduud, Mudug, Nugaal, and Bari, Sool, and neighboring Ogadenia regions (it will really be a hub and an important penetration of the Somali populated center in the Horn)
-It is the largest public infrastructure project self-financed and to be completed by Somali civil society without being built by Somali government, UNDP, or other international institutions
-It has already had its first successful touchdown
-

This is the process so far:

D-Runner, the formula for Boosaaso airport looks similar to Mogadishu airport as well but smaller. I predict Caabudwaaq airport tower design will probably look very similar to Boosaaso tower as well.

Murax-

First the airport has already secured contract from the UN to be its main airport for use in central Somalia and neighboring regions. Large overhaul cargo will be transited there and then sent elsewhere. Also there are talks with the major airline carriers to Somalia to have Caabudwaaq as the hub in the central area with smaller catch planes or other forms of transportation linking to neighboring regions. There are also talks with the UNDP about road building to and from the airport.

I think the next step for innovative Caabudwaaq business people is to have road transportation and cargo transportation that will facilitate travel to and from Caabudwaaq airport to neighboring districts and regions. Even restaurants, hotel stay, and taxi to and from say Cadaado or Dhuusa-mareeb or Ceelbuur or Balanbale or the other areas that will look to Caabudwaaq airport as the main hub and transit point before final destination. It will be the major port of entry by air to a large swathe of Somalia and ganacsi will facilitate Caabudwaaq's immense development.

This project isn't being just so Caabudwaaq can have an airport but so that Caabudwaaq city can be the main penetration by air to large swathe of land. There are many rewards to be reaped and the amount of energy and capital being spent supports that objective.

2300 m is less than the 3000 m runway benchmark needed for large planes but it's not bad. And Caabudwaaq is way too small and isolated to become the "hub" for central Somalia. Isn't there a 3000 m former Somali military runway in Xuddur or was it Tiyeglow? Where are the pictures of the 1000 paved runway... all I see is gravel.
