I met one a few weeks ago and I was so shocked. She said no one in her family can. I asked how she prays and she shrugged and said "just like that".

There are Muslims who don't know who Allah is. I've had the pleasure of interacting with some of those kids.

Teach her how to read and pray; that's your duty.

In hindsight I should have lakin we're not in contact anymore. The Fatiha thread just made me think of her.
I just thought every Muslim learnt that at the very least.

wouldn't be surprised, I myself had a VERY poor understanding of Islaam. I taught myself everything just by reading. Sometimes in the West, parents forget, and as a young kid, you forget what you were taught.

12ish, if I remember right. Some were younger.
And yes, I've met a few adults who couldn't read the Qur'an or recite any surahs, aside from a mumbled Fatiha. But I don't think any have admitted to not knowing it at all.

Damn, I guess growing up in Africa Islam was almost part of our Somali culture. Everyone went to duksi and everyone had to try to finish the entire Quran, no to duksi just meant ul

My Quran knowledge is pretty pathetic as well lakin this took me back. It's Fatiha you know?
You want to know something, most of the Muslim girls I met in uni were taught the Quran by their mothers, I found that to be the cutest thing ever. One chick was taught that by her mom and her dad taught her about their Madhab and haddiths and stuff. I was like aaawww I want that for my kids

I've said it plenty times in this forum and on others; Somalis worry too much about culture when our focus should be on deen. The coming generations will be screwed in that regard. I'm not phased any more by kids asking who Maahaamid is. Absent minded parents start screaming and crying when their teenage kids say they don't believe in Islam any more. Their fault.

That's what I mean about it being our culture. Back at home no one really had to put in the effort, it was how it was but that system doesn't work in the West.
