They should arm themselves and fight back. WTF kinda shyt is this? Violence isn't good but if it's inevitable then I'd rather the somalis there do the killing than the inverse.

It is not really old news. Somalis are still being killed there. Dadka la gumaysan jiray ma naxariis badna. Just read the comments by South Africans on these videos and you will see what kind of people they are. I think these Somalis are partially to blame for these incidents too. They keep opening these shops in the slums knowing very well how dangerous it is in these kinds of places for foreign shopkeepers.

These guys have family to support back home and are willing to risk their lives to do it.

The reality of this whole dilemma, as we all know, it won't stop any time soon, until another group of foreigners start settling in the slums or Somalis decide to fight back.

I have been to South Africa three times during the past 5 years. It is a fascinating country where the footprints of apartheid are still potent; racism, discrimination and injustices. In most of the big cities, Durban, Johannesburg, Cape town , there appears to be a spatial dimension; Whites are clustered in the city centres, coloured make the second ring and Africans still live in shanty towns, slums and townships. With the exception of a few, like Soweto, these slums don’t have basic infrastructure and a breeding ground for marauding thugs.

The ANC has done a lot since the demolition of apartheid but the road ahead is tough. It takes time to dismantle the twigs of a system that promoted inequality.

The somalis usually conduct businesses in townships and rural areas; crime ridden areas in which the rule of law is absent. The crime rate in these areas is very high when compared to the other parts of the country because of historical reasons .
There are several theories in circulation as to why somalis are targeted; one heady one is that Asian and black shopkeepers view them as a threat to their monopolies. Then there is the issue of criminality which has nothing to do with ethnicity.

Unfortunately, there is no easy solution as long as somalis decide to set up shops in rural areas. They face a trade-off because it is in the rural areas that profits are made.
