Funny Story

Post by mody21 »

Ok so today I was at this work/training thing, I was sitting eating lunch minding my own bussines, when I heard a funny conversation between the only somali girl in the program, the white kids where asking her where she was from and such, she said she was from the horn, then one of the guys asked her if she was somalia pointed at me and said "he is also somali" , the girl then replied, oh no I am not somali , I am djiboutian, at this point some of the kids started asking what the difference, then she explained or attempted (poorly) how she was not somali. The group then looked at me and said "so is that true"..I looked at her and said "cisa maatahaay" she looked back and said "haa " ...I then said "I guess she is not somali". We had an awkward silence, and went our separate ways. I kinda felt betrayed, but then I thought "to each his own".

She has no point. Arabs call themselves Arab whether they from Sudan or Iraq.

You're confusing nationality with ethnicity and vice versa. That said you don't need a particularly sophisticated understanding of these notions to see that 'Arab' isn't an answer to the question where are you from.

Furthermore, people have the liberty to self-identify as they please. If you feel, as the OP does, betrayed by their choices frankly that's your problem.

My cousin's brother-in-law is a Isaaq. When he's around Non-Somalis, he claims to be a "Djiboutian", when he's with Somalis, he claims to be from Somalia and when he's around Northern Somalis only, he brags about being a "Somalilander".

She embarrased herself. People would get the impression that she is ashamed to be SOmalian. That is all. No-one gives a damn or even understands the difference of those little little shit places of ours. We are ALL SOmalis and refugees. Born here or else where, that is how you are viewed. accept it embrace it and get over it.

The likelihood is that those asked here her nationality have already knew that she is SOmalian.

But arenot Jabutians Somalis? they are Somalis from Jabuiti. Ethnicly Somali, language Somali. So there first answer would be 'Somali from Jabuiti', I guess.

But you did well for speaking with her in Somali  that answered other people's inquiry

Another self-hater

People from Djibouti are somalis, and I never seen anyone before deny this.
But like Advo said, ignore her kind. Let them stay confused while the whole world view them as somalis.

Well she isn't a Somali national as Fey said, and to be honest do you blame her for not wanting to identify with the embarrassment next door?
