Syrian general defects
A Syrian general and personal friend of President Bashar al-Assad, who was apparently sidelined an year ago, has defected and fled Syria.
Opposition activists have told Al Jazeera that Manaf Tlas, a brigade commander in Assad's Republican Guard, has left the country and will soon announce that he abandoned Assad because of anger over civilian deaths during the 16-month uprising.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius confirmed on Friday that Tlas, who attended military college with the 46-year-old Assad, had defected and was bound for Paris.
Tlas is the son of Mustafa Tlas, who served as defence minister for 30 years under former president Hafez al-Assad and briefly under his son, the current president.
A witness in Damascus said by telephone that Tlas' house in Damascus was ransacked on Thursday by security agents after these reports.
Riad al-Asaad, the commander with the Free Syrian Army, told Al Jazeera from Turkey: "Our people picked [Tlas] up from the borders with Syria". Asaad said on Thursday that he had not yet met with Tlas.
Ankara did not immediately confirm the reports. Syriasteps, a news website close to Assad's security services, quoted a Syrian official as saying Tlas was in Turkey.
Syriasteps wrote: "His desertion means nothing. If Syrian intelligence had wanted to arrest him it would have."

LOL
Another supposed important general defects. If this was the case, Syria wouldn't have a army, yet the government controls all cities and has ousted western backed and financed terrorists out of towns near the border,
The honourable Assad is winning this war brutally

Re: Syrian general defects
This whole thing is a joke. The war is a joke and the international involvement is a joke.
The financiers of "Friends of Syria", the group calling for Syria to improve its human rights conditions and promote democracy include Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Israel.
Qatar, the same country that doesn't have adequate laws that protect foreign South Asian workers and as a result, are practically treated like slaves.
Saudi Arabia, the same country that doesn't allow its women to drive.
Bahrain, the same country that imprisoned an 11 year old boy for months for "participating" in the recent uprisings when he was actually just a bystander.
Kuwait, the same country that restricts local journalists from criticizing the government and monarchy.
Israel, the same country that has the blood of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian children, fathers, mothers and the elderly on its hands.
Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.

I would only suppport the opposition if they had the people behind them. Its seems like they dont.
The opposition is driven by foreign nations such as qatar, saudi, Israel and Turkey. In millions year they cant beat Assad with grassroots support of the people.

The rebels have no chance of winning if Russia keeps supporting Assad both politically and economically. I am impressed though with the strength though of the FSA. I hear they are close to 100,000 men.

Religiously they are better.

Honestly they dont have any strenght, its loose coaltion of different people with different goal united by one enemy, take Assad out of the equation and they will be fighting each other.InvisibleHand wrote:The rebels have no chance of winning if Russia keeps supporting Assad both politically and economically. FSA has the support of the sunnis.
Even if Russia gives nukes and thousands of tanks, it wouldnt help the alawis to escape from great genocide which they deserve.

Re: Syrian general defects
They said that about the Libyan rebels too but it didn't turn out as serious as what some were predicting. If Assad does get toppled, it'll be interesting to see what happens with the Free Syrian Army and Syria in general.Substance wrote:Honestly they dont have any strenght, its loose coaltion of different people with different goal united by one enemy, take Assad out of the equation and they will be fighting each other.InvisibleHand wrote:The rebels have no chance of winning if Russia keeps supporting Assad both politically and economically. Re: Syrian general defects
Libya will be probably seperated in the near future and also that conflict has lead to great damage to Mali and other countries nearby, so its very hard to predict what happens in war yes the alawites is fighting on deathground, they must win basically for their own survival.InvisibleHand wrote: They said that about the Libyan rebels too but it didn't turn out as serious as what some were predicting. Re: Syrian general defects
The internal fighting in Libya IS and WAS bloody by Ghaddfi fell. Couple weeks ago, 150 people were killed in internal fighting. No main news agencies report this since it doesn't fit the narrativeInvisibleHand wrote: They said that about the Libyan rebels too but it didn't turn out as serious as what some were predicting.
