Eastern regions diaspora conference opens in Burco

A development based conference involving various diaspora of the eastern regions of Somaliland namely Saaxil, Daad Madheedh, Sanaag, Sool, Togdheer and Saraar.
The main agenda is how the diaspora from those regions can have a better role in advancing their regions of origin.

About the conference

Somaliland Diaspora Agency (SDA) in collaboration with Togdheer Regional Governor organizes a consultative meeting with Somaliland Diaspora groups from the eastern regions of Somaliland to be held at City Plaza Hotel in Burao as noted above. This is part of the Agencys priorities in 2012 in conducting broad consultations upon improving Diaspora role in nation building and homeland development.

Purpose of the conference:

As only recently, the 2nd Annual Diaspora conference was held in Hargeisa which different Diaspora communities participated, due to the existing national priorities in the Eastern regions, this conference aims to evaluate the extent of the Diaspora role in those regions, identifying key challenges and needs and consult about the best responsive measures the Diaspora can contribute to including the sectors as local economy, health, road networking, peace empowerment, water, education and droughts as well.



As the theme of this conference is Diaspora role in eastern regions the event plans to host about 200 Diaspora particularly from the eastern regions namely Togdheer, Sool, Sanaag, Saaxil, Daadmadheedh, Saraar iyo Cayn of the Diaspora communities in Europe, North America, Arab States and Africa. Officials from key government institutions, potential business companies mostly invested by the Diaspora, regional authorities, traditional figures and civil society organizations shall also participate in the event.

SDA shall organize this conference in collaboration with Togdheer Regional Governor and it is scheduled on Tuesday 21st August, 2012 at City Plaza, Burao town at 6:00pm in the evening.

Objectives and overall goals of the conference



Encourage Diaspora role and contribution to national building and public service development.

Fully encourage Diaspora participation in local investment and economic development in the private sector.

Strengthen cooperation of Somaliland Diaspora communities and their relations with the government and homeland.

Assist the government in making concrete policy and strategies towards the Diaspora relations and their role in the development of their homeland.

Identify major challenges and obstacles that may affect and weaken the role of Diaspora in positively contributing towards Somalilands progress.

Output:

1-A great understanding of the opportunities available for Diaspora in Somaliland and how they can invest in them.

2-Gain advance knowledge of the Somali Diaspora to enhance SDAs work.

3-Facilities interaction between existing and potential investors to network and encourage collaboration.

4-Share good practices and lessons learned.

4-A report & summary of findings.

Time to fund for more roads like that of the Ina Guuxa road, presumably a road extending from eastern berbera to the kor shori lagoon.

A well planned town can be built in that lagoon,

Encouragement of greater diaspora participation is good. Due to the Government's limited budget they can't fund roads, hospitals etc for all the
vast areas in the east.
