One person has been reported dead during a battle between police and youth protesting the killing of Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo outside Majengo mosque, Mombasa.

Gunmen shot dead the radical Muslim cleric in Bamburi area in Mombasa.

The cleric was killed when the van he was travelling in from Mtwapa towards Mombasa with three other people on board was sprayed with bullets near Pirates Beach.

Two of them have sustained serious injuries and rushed to hospital as his body was taken away.

According to the wife, Haniya said Saadar, Aboud who was driving the van was taking one person to hospital when the incident occured.

A conflict arose between police and the clerics' supporters as the latter fought to have custody of the body. In a private ambulance, the supporters seized the body claiming to take it to Kikambala, Kilifi for burial.

A Salvation Army church near the Majengo mosque where a service for the diseased was being held was set on fire. Protesters were dispersed as they tried to attack another church, Jesus Celebration centre in Tudor.
Aboud Rogo Mohammed was placed on a US sanctions list in July for "engaging in acts that directly or indirectly threaten the peace, security or stability of Somalia".

The UN Security Council imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on him in July, saying he had provided "financial, material, logistical or technical support to al-Shabab".

It accused him of being the "main ideological leader" of Kenya's al-Hijra group, also known as the Muslim Youth Centre, which is viewed as a close ally of al-Shabab.

He had "used the extremist group as a pathway for radicalisation and recruitment of principally Swahili-speaking Africans for carrying out violent militant activity in Somalia," the UN added.

In 2005, Mr Rogo was cleared on murder charges over the 2002 attack on a hotel where Israeli tourists were staying, which killed 12 people.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assassins:
1. Were definitely heavily armed black Africans.
2. They shot the guy, stopped their own vehicle, and then came out to assess their grim handiwork.
3. The shots they fired were precise and are only visible around the driver's/victim's door.
4. They stood around for at least 15 minutes without talking or discussion amongst themselves.
5. Even Bamburi OCS whose station is just 150m away came out but did not question or discuss anything with the killers, giving rise to speculation that he knew exactly who they were and the issue was out of his jurisdiction.

They should have arrested him and put him on trial. Is there no law in Kenya? How can you just spray bullets in a car carrying innocent sick people on their way to hospital just because of one man? Stupid Africans.

Kenya kills children in Somalia, and now their own civilians are not safe.

If he was really pro Al-Shabab and if he was really involved in the Al-Shabab activity in Somalia in any shape or form, then good riddance. I don't care. He can be fed to the alligators and his testicles chopped up to be eaten by the vultures.

it wasnt murder. it was justice. more of them will be given their taste of justice soon.

al shabab and her allies and the extremists will never win. what is there not to understand? u might win the battle but u will not win the war. those days of winning the battles are the past. these extremists are going to lose the war.

Im normaly against alshabab because of their methods but this is just as wrong. Alshabab hide behind religion just as these kijukus hide behind the name of terrorism to murder innocent people.

What about the other people in his car who are now seriously injured? We cannot just kill people willy nilly, that's what Al Shabab does. The guy was moving around freely, I'm sure the police knew where he lived so why didn't they just arrest him that way? Something's fishy.

U can't go gunning down people cause u deem them responsible for something especially when you have no due process. It's not like he had a gun and was shooting people.

This is clearly murder.

So some guy says stuff which you disagree with and you go and shoot him up, and you call that justice?

I didn't know Kenya was still in the dark ages! In a civilized society, you cannot take the law into your own hands and kill people in the streets. Things like this lead to irreversible chaos and mayhem. It is also the ultimate insult to Kenya's judiciary system.

If those who were injured are the likes of him, then I don't care. If they were innocent people, then I am sorry that happened and hope they recover quickly and be given a sincere apology. I don't accept how he just sprayed bullets out in the open like that but I am happy the likes of him are dead. No tears are to be shed for this man.

It is more than what he said. The article says that he also was some way involved in carrying out Al-Shabab activity in Somalia and thats according to the UN. I dont agree with the way the man just killed him out in the open since other people who could potentially be innocent were injured but are we supposed to feel sympathetic for this man?
