Rescued Somalian cheetah named after Mo Farah winning its race for life

She may not be as fast as her human namesake Mo Farah just yet, but rescued Somalian cheetah Little Mo has won her race for life.

.The spotted feline was saved by authorities as she was being smuggled out of Berbera, in the Sahel region of north-west Somaliland, in March of this year.

The two-week-old cub was barely alive when she was found by officials, having been kept for days in a cramped box offering little protection from the sun.

'It seemed appropriate to name her after her fellow Somalian [Mo Farah],' explained a spokesman for wildlife sanctuary Born Free.


Five months on from her ordeal, the big cat is well on the way to making a full recovery at the Born Free Wildlife Education and Rescue Centre outside Addis, Ethiopia.

The Born Free sanctuary plans to eventually release Little Mo back into the wild following her 'remarkable progress' over the last five months.

'That’s some way off yet,' said a spokesperson for the Foundation, 'but she has made remarkable progress.'

Authorities believe Little Mo was possibly on her way to the Middle East where there is a demand for cheetahs as exotic pets.
