This has me wondering how the phenomenon of migrating to Europe, North America, Australia, etc started. I remember during the mid 80s some people acquiring Eritrean documentations (ID card, passport, etc) to seek asylum in Europe. I know individuals who went to Germany, Sweden, Finland and the UK between the mid 80s to onstart of the civil war, though I don't know what stories of persecution they claimed or what documentations they had.KimJongIllest wrote:I am not sure why Somalis decided to immigrate to Europe in the first place considering the other options available.
Was this period (mid 80s to onstart of civil war) a preparation for the people who will migrate en masse after the start of the civil war? A preparation letting them know where to go for survival? I might sound conspiratorial, but it looks like a staged preparation.
The reason why I say I might sound conspiratorial is, because I wonder if there were no option of migration, how events of the civil war would have folded. With the presence of most of those who migrated (including the educated, intellectuals, doctors, military experts, the police, etc), I think people would have been forced to defend themselves, guard their assets (houses, businesses, etc) and find solutions for lawlessness, chaos, etc.
For disclosure, I left Xamar a year after the start of the civil war.
Discuss.
