Somalia wants to join EAC

Post by DANGIRL »

Old news, but I found that Somalia wants to join the EAC( East African Community). Members includes Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and soon to be South Sudan( ).

What can somalia possibly gain from this? I mean all these countries depend on foreign aid. And get this, they've proposed the federation of the five countries into one sing state by the year 2015. That means if Somalia is accepted, that'll mean one currency, one passport, offical language being kiswahili and open borders.

:mindblown:

Maybe it doesn't hold any importance anymore since it was done under the TFG. :sadcam:

EAC is a trading bloc, nothing more. It just means business between those countries will be easier. We are already members of IGAD, why not EAC? Single currency and political union are just mere proposals, Its not gonna be adopted.

Yes, the East African Shilling will be introduced in a few years and it will have a EAC president.

Its a start but one that includes all of Africa would be better. However, just an economic union rather than a political one. Get rid of the tariffs, get rid of the tourist and business visas for African travellers, create one African currency, have the same food and safety standards, same workplace safety standards. Even working together militarily would be great.

But forget about a political union.

Dangirl is right there were plans or talks of a confederation of Kenya uganda burundi rwanda tanzania they are already introducing a single Currency east Africa shilling . They are also creating one Parliament its similar to the European union i dont think it will eventually lead to a federation as some say of a single country. Not a single Confederation in Africa worked but more closer cooperation between these Countries is very much possible and its smart. Its not like IGAD Ethiopias playground.

The Somali currency survive without a government for two decades and will continue to prosperity in the coming years. So why would you want to abandon it for something?

Greenday,

When I went to Somalia, it was 3.3 million SOS for 100 USD.

The EAC is merely a trading block. THe only benefit would be the Visa free travel. Kenya would gain a lot from SOmalia joining EAC as its industries are suited to export to Somalia and they have thousands of well educated citizens who would travel to Somalia to work .

Give it time, It will eventually go down. But having one currency with those countries will lead to a failure like Euro maybe worser.

That will not work out well.

The cons outweight the pros.

DANGIRL,

Somalia is going to be one of the fastest growing economies in Africa due to the massive reconstruction efforts. It will make South Sudans reconstruction seem like a minor one.
