1/3? The hell did you get those statistics from? Not anywhere near that. If it goes up, may be 10 %. :idea:

I would suggest you write a Somali paragraph, or even copy and paste any Somali work, whether from a news site or a story & count the words to see how many of them have Arabic origin.

Garaad, it's easy to list a long list of Somali words of Arabic origin but the point is what's the overall percentage?

Link any Somali site, politics, literature or anything and check the number of words that have Arabic root.

twist i don't have any link right now but i read somewhere that it was around 40% but i don't think it's that high , but it's more then 10%
i come around tons of Somalized arabic words everyday when i listen to Somali chit-chating :lol:

and also most of the Somalized Arabic words are nouns , we only took al asaami you would hardly find Arabic verb in Somali (magacyada oo kale ah ayaan ka qaadanay ) so it's hard to find them all grouped up in one paragraph

Let me try to write a paragraph in Somali;

Kolkii aanu maqlay Madaxweynaha la doortey waanu ku diirsanay, deedna waanu wada damaashaadnay. Waxaanu u rajeyney inuu noqdo kii Somaaliyi ku xasili lahayd oo ku degi lahayd. Dad badan aqoon uma lahayn Madaxweynaha, hase yeeshee isla markiiba wuxuu soo jiitey qalbiga iyo dareenka dadweynaha khaas ahaan markii ay dhegeysteen qudbaddiisii u horreysey ee uu u jeediyay shacabiga umadda Somaaliiyeed. Nasiib darro, waxaa sii kordhey qaraxyadii ka dhacayey magaalada Muqdisho waxayna dadku isweydiinayaan, tolow yaa ka dambeeya??, :?

In addition to nouns, there are lots of verbs. One verb:

-cab

In addition to modern Arabic, Somali language contains lots of old Arabic. Arabic is more manifested in Waqooyi Galbeed Somali (the birth place of af-Soomaali) than Southern Somali. However, a substantial number of Southern Somalis have become quite familiarized with Arabic since al-Shabaab took power. I've talked with some who use words like "calal cumuum" while conversing with me.

The article in the link argues Somali was wrongly classified as Cushitic, but actually is Semitic.
