Charges after confined Edmonton woman saved from arranged-marriage row

Cops rescued a 21-year-old Edmonton woman found forcibly confined in her home as she awaited an arranged marriage outside of Canada, say police, who have charged a man and woman.

Officers responded to a family dispute call at a southside home around 11:30 p.m. back on Monday, Feb. 6.

When officers arrived, they found the 21-year-old woman was forcibly confined in her house.

The woman, identified in court documents as Zounara Khokhar, was being forced into an arranged marriage outside of the country, said investigators.

She refused, telling her parents she had a boyfriend and made plans to move out.

With her belongings ready to go, her mother took her purse, which had her passport inside. Then, police say she was allegedly assaulted and confined in the home against her will.

Locked in room

Police sources say overnight the mother slept in the hallway outside the room her daughter was locked in, while her dad slept on the couch. The victim banged on the door asking to be let out, when her dad got angry and punched her in the face, breaking her nose.

Court documents show that the weapons used in the assault include a laptop computer and an electrical cord. Police sources say there were lacerations on the woman’s back.

She was locked in the room and realized she had a cellphone and called police, who helped her out.
Victim safe’

“We can tell you the victim is safe and doing well,” cop spokeswoman Noreem Remtulla said Thursday.

Hate crimes investigators on Tuesday charged Muhammad Rafi, 59, with two counts of assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and assault. Najma Khokhar, 49, is charged with forcible confinement and assault.

Both posted $1,000 bail each and were released Wednesday.

The first court appearance is set for Dec. 19.
