Turkish Aid

The Turkish model of aid to Somalia has to be commended. They have circumvented handing cash over to the government but instead only exchange goods and technical services. This approach ensures that the Turkish economy benefits from the aid and makes theft of aid that much harder. Too often, we see aid being run through various local and international NGOs with only a fraction of that aid reaching the end users. The Turkish model is what DFID, USAID, SIDA used to do decades ago: direct implementation instead of contracting out most of the work.
