The Dedication to Service award recognises those who have dedicated their knowledge, training and professional skills to directly improving and giving back to their communities.

Edna Adan has committed her life to improving the health and well being of the people in Somaliland - an area in Africa which experiences one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. Every year, one baby in eight dies in infancy, while nearly 4000 Somali women die in childbirth.

Edna left Somaliland to study for several years in the UK, becoming the first qualified nurse-midwife from Somaliland. After years of work in maternal healthcare alongside the World Health Organisation, Edna sold her possessions and returned to her native land to fulfil her lifelong dream of opening a maternal health care hospital. After 4 years of overcoming financial and logistical setbacks, the doors to the Edna Adan University Hospital opened in 2000.

Today, the hospital has trained up to 200 nurses and 150 midwives; with a vision of training and dispatching 1,000 qualified midwives throughout Somaliland, so that women living in the most rural areas can have access to a basic right, maternal care.

Edna Adan is an advocate for women and girls, men, families and communities in Somaliland.

If Somalia was only populated by Isaaqs and Daroods we would have been a first world country. These bloody Hutus drag us down so much.

She lost my respect when she call all somalis in the South pirates and terrorist. We loved her when she was the PM wife and all we got back was stupid and irrational collective lumping of all of us. Unfortunately, Hawiye own Somalia. the rights to live in Somalia was given to Isaaq and Darood by Hawiye. Isaaqs and Daroods are the purest Somalis, which is obvious to any observer. They aren't Arabs at all. Since you raise the question of foreign blood.. then Hawiyes and their loser Raxanweyn cousins are heavily infected with Bantu genes and racially more foreign to the Horn of Africa. Why don't you guys just go back to your motherland the Congo and leave Somalia for Somalis?

Secondly, the reason why the north can't reach its full potential at the moment is due to the international image the name 'Somali' gotten because of Hutu monkeys. Nobody wants anything to do with Somalia or Somalis because of Hutus and this limits development.

Sheikh Isaaq bin Axmed bin Abii Daliib al-Hashimiyi Came to Ceergaabo in 1515 on a boat as well. And now all of a sudden you are the last Somali alive? If you think Somalia is badly Managed by Hawiye, then why indure the trouble of living in it. If I were you, I would just ask my people to go back. All you do is dis-associate yourself from them. I think age got the best of her but none the less she done wonders for her people, that is if the allegation that she ties her patients to their bed if they dont pay up is false
