The Honorable Lion of Garissa ADen Barre Duale

The Lion of Garissa, MP Aden Barre Duale spoke in strong terms to condemn the KDF atrocities in Garissa on BBC last evening and also on international media. This brilliant man was the first to question another MP Yusuf Haji's misadventures in Somalia and what would be the costs of engagement in Somalia. I hope that MP Duale is relected so that he can continue to help develop Garissa and protect the rights of the people there.

Yusuf Haji has egg on his face.

Maalim: Garissa looks like a scene from Syria

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 20 – Lagdera MP Farah Maalim has accused security agencies of deploying excessive force while trying to restore calm in Garissa following the shooting of three Kenya Defence Forces troops in the town.
Maalim who is also the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly claimed that Dujis MP Aden Duale was almost shot in the mayhem in Garissa.
“The place looks like a scene from Syria!” Maalim told his fellow legislators on Tuesday as he demanded a ministerial statement from the Ministry of Defence.
He questioned whether constitutional provisions had been followed in getting the military involved in maintaining law and order which requires Parliament’s approval.
Maalim claimed Garissa businessmen had made colossal losses following the mayhem on Monday and Tuesday when security agencies mounted a crackdown in the northeastern town.
On Monday, three KDF officers were shot by assailants along Garissa’s Kismayu street as they tried to repair their vehicle’s tyre.
Tension built up immediately after security officers were deployed on the ground to trail the suspects. Residents accused security officers of harassing them with no justified cause, allegations that security forces have dismissed.
The town of Garissa, which is the headquarter of North Eastern province, has of late experienced increased cases of insecurity especially from October last year when the government sent its troops to the neighbouring Somalia to help root out the Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militia.
Meanwhile, Internal Security Minister Katoo Ole Metito is on Wednesday expected to brief MPs on the activities of Kenya’s troops a year after Parliament authorised the military to deploy in pursuit of the Al Shabaab terror network.
“I have accordingly directed that the minister makes a report to the House by way of a statement tomorrow (Wednesday) during the afternoon sitting,” Marende said.

Kenya: Duale to Oppose Terror Bill in House
BY STEPHEN ASTARIKO, 18 JUNE 2012
Dujis MP Aden Duale has threatened to mobilise Kenyans to shoot down the anti-terrorism bill when it is brought to Parliament. Speaking during a graduation ceremony at Najah Islamic institution in Dujis, Dualle said there was a plot by the government to portray members of the Muslim community as terrorists.

Duale said that it was unfortunate that the community was being fought by the same government that should be protecting them. "We also know of a scheme to profile all the Somali Muslim business people as terrorists. This is all done by the government, an example of our fellow business people in Eastleigh who are constantly harassed by police officers. We will not accept this to happen under our watch," he said. "We want to know what is the government doing to arrest those who are behind the killing of our fellow Muslim brother Samir Khan on Mackinon Road in Voi. Up to now, the government has chosen to remain mum about the matter. We still don't know where Mohamed Kasim is three months since he disappeared," he added.

He said the Somali community had been subjected to a lot of suffering since Kenya took its troops to fight in Somalia adding that that should not be the case since "they had no business with what was happening in Somalia." The Dujis MP said the scheme to have the anti-terrorism bill introduced in Parliament was being pushed by some Western countries "for their own selfish gains". "This time round we, won't be doped into entering into memorandums of understanding that we know nothing about. Some politicians have the habit of cheating us into entering into fake MoUs only because they want our votes but fail to honour them. That one won't happen this time round, "he added.

He urged them to take their time and read the constitution which they voted for overwhelmingly and understand their rights saying that unlike the old constitution where their rights were violated with nothing being done, he said that the new one protected every individual's right irrespective of his tribe or where he come from.
