$3500 per month for Somali parliamentarians

Post by waryaa »

The Parliament approved $3,500/month salary and all what they have to do is attend one session per year. There are two important sessions in each year and you are allowed to skip one. It is $42,000 income with the condition you must come to Mogadishu once a year. In four years, you get $168,000.

kickbacks, lobbying and backdoor deals: not included.

Do you know the "base salary" of the President, PM and the ministers in his cabinet?

Waryaa;
How much do minister get a month? Damn, having 3500 a month in the shithole Muqdisho is like making 12000 a month here in the States.

You can live like a king with that!

I'll find the the pres/PM/etc's for u.

The difference is as a parliament member you can actually live in Cuba or have a second income in your host country. As a minister, u must live in Mogadishu.

Nothing compared to the Kenyan MPs who gross over $13,000USD per month tax free.

But lets do the math:

MP Salaries: $3,500 @ 275 = $962,500 per month

So assuming the government nets about $3 million per month from the Port of Mogadishu and another $1.5 million per month from the Mogadishu Airport, that gives it optimistically, a $4.5 million dollar guaranteed revenue stream each month of which 962,500 is spent on parliament or 20%. Lets say business becomes slow and it drops to $3 million, the parliament's cost would be 32%, nearly 1/3.

Now lets plugin estimates for the other branches of government:

President's Office Costs including salaries, operating costs = $125,000 per month
PM Salary and Office Costs = $100,000 per month (based on Abdiweli's budget)
Cabinet Salaries and Office Costs = 10 Ministries @ $50,000 = $500,000
Security Budget = 8,000 staff @ $150 + $1,000,000 operating = $2,200,000
Total = $2,925,000

Throw in parliaments, $962,500 + 2,925,000 = $3,887,500

The government so far can squeeze by only on its Benadir costs. No room for other localities. We haven't accounted for other costs for nonBenadir operations: foreign missions, other provincial outposts, etc.

Either way, this government needs to find revenue streams fast.

awahab, d u think it is justifiable to pay $11,550,000 per yr for one day's work when men and women who are dying every day to protect the establishment don't get salaries for months?

Kenya's parliament members work almost every day run a whole nation and spend their salaries back in the country unlike ours most of whom with western passports. I think it is unfair to give salary to ppl who don't even live in the country. rip off...

What waryaa said up there.

It's just unbelievable and unjustifiable! Still a lot of people are starving & in refugee camps inside the country, the nation is in ruins since 1991, and these bastards are going to pocket $3,500 a month? In Xamar? :mindblown:

No wonder there were rumors of hopeful parliamentarians willing to pay tens of thousands of Dollars to get elected as members of the parliament. f-king unethical! :down:

Somalia can not afford this now. We can't pay soldiers $50-$100 dollars why should MPs get $3500? Thats close to what a Swedish MP gets after tax.

The thing is they are the policy makers. Some of them proposed 5k but the majority shied away from it.

Do you know the first motion they passed? constitution amendment that says the president cannot disband them :mrgreen:

The country needs an independent supreme court that can deal with the pr and gov. Maybe it is time the fourth jufo in the 4.5 given the attorney general post :)

I think their previous salary was very small considering how life in Mogadishu has skyrocketed, $3,500 is not a lot for a law maker. The government needs to establish an independent revenue collection agency then it can collect enough money to run the country.

prince, the thing is that thy are required to attend one session ONLY per year. Some of them already left the country and went back to their old jobs. What kind of law maker is that? In my opinion, you must live in Somalia to take such responsibility.

I agree with u 100%, attendance should be 100% due to many bills bending, what is more maybe we should had a condition that says anyone who is holding foreign nationality cant hold public office like Egypt?
