William John Waterman, 1930: Which Somali live in Jubbaland:

Post by The`Republic »

Tramping through Africa: a dozen crossings of the continent
William John Waterman Roome
Macmillan Co., 1930
330 pages

Page 31:
Of the Somali tribes the Marehan, Ogaden, and Herti are most strongly represented in Juba-land.
Why are, then, people surprised that Darods have dominated the affairs of Jubbaland in the last 20 years, and that Darod was the principal clan engaged by IGAD to form an administration for Jubbaland?

Where does this idea that others are majority but less armed come from?

I think USC revolution in 1991 bred a temporary sense of hubris and a reconfiguration of the psychological understanding of Somalia that many non-Darod have and as we get out of civil war, start stabilizing, and the civil war and temporary uprisings are considered behind us---the false narratives and sense of misconceptions about the reality vis-a-vis honorable claim and dishonorable claim will come to be sorted.

It already seems to be sorting when the reality is observed and the USC line is shown to be stopped, in a southernly direction, at maximum after the Lower Shabelle and at minimum the before the border of Lower Shabelle.

I think this explains why so many Hawiye seem to be frusterated and view themselves powerless nowadays politically anywhere south of Afgooye and with the political legitimacy over the plains of Lower Shabelle to be the probably the biggest political war yet to be played out---between Hawiye and Digle and Mirifle.

I wonder who was escorting Waterman in Jubbaland. We all know that Darood had the propensity to dhabadilif for the colonizers.

Abdiwahab-

The Darod are the only people to have been at war with the British. The Herti resisted, the Ogaden fought, and as for the Marehan they have an entire chapter dedicated to them called the "Marehan Offensive" in the official chronicle of the King's African Rifle's historiagraphy. Only the Mad Mullah and the Marehan Offensive are chapters dedicated to British imperialism in Somalia. Contains many pictures, notes, and maps. This picture of conscripted Ugandans with the KAR is one of them

The entire history of Jubbaland is a Darod venture.

Native Affairs. The political situation has been generally satis-
factory. Our knowledge of routes, the resources of the country,
and the temper of the inhabitants, especially in the further parts,
has increased considerably. Officers are constantly travelling and
living among the tribes, and this policy, will no doubt bear very
good results among the Somalis, if accompanied by an extension
of trading facilities. The tribes are divided into six sections,
namely, the Herti, the Mohamed Ztibeir, the Aulihan, the
Maghabul, the Abdullah, and the Sheigaal. All are Kablalla
Somalis. The Marehan are a separate tribe.

I just googled it; a composition of some little telegrams by a colonial secretary relaying information. Nothing scholarly or printed. Knowing Dannie, she's probably pissed at my last post about King's African Rifles and striking back in her unique passive-aggressive style. :)

I don't wanna sound harsh but i have a strong feeling this jubbaland initiative will never materialize. It's about as unrealistic as Somaliland getting independence. Won't happen.

Honestly Abakar, I don't really care if Jubbaland materializes through the IGAD approach or not. I'm not emotionally invested. I know the three regions will go together and I prefer a scenerio without the Kenyan interference. The whole narrative will reflect true reality then.

It's a catch 22 situation, really. If it's left to Somalis to decide among themselves then i hardly see any strong reconciliation happening. And if foreigners get involved the situation just exacerbates..
